MONDAY RUNDOWN: CFL/XFL TALK, WEEKEND WRAP & MORE!
We were back at it Monday with Episode #452 of The RP Show – Canada’s Daytime Sports Talkshow – with more great guests! Read on for the rundown:
- RP and Moose Dupont kicked it off with The Warmup for Four Seasons Sports Palace covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) The Rock Tweets about possible XFL/CFL scheduling, 2) Toronto Business Journal posted two columns about saving the CFL as well as a merger being Fake News (of course we had to weigh in), 3) Sunday NHL leftovers, 4) NFL going to 17 games in 2021, 5) Dub Hub happenings, and 6) The Blue Jays open their season Thursday at the NY Yankees.
- There were some connection problems with CFL alum Eddie Steele so we delved into the CFL/XFL discussion by trying to figure out what The Rock meant with his Tweet. Regarding the future of the CFL, it’s apparent that there a million different opinions out there including letting the CFL die rather than merge, as well as what opportunities a merger could pose. Rod figures the Toronto Business Journal’s proposal of using Canadian university players as “replacement players” isn’t a good plan at all.
- When Steele joined us, he explained that he’s not against a merger but hopes the ratio stays in place for Canadian players. He feels Rod’s olive branch that the ratio be kept for Canadian teams but not American teams would be acceptable. He also related stories of dominating American players in training camp as a rookie with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Regarding the latest player paycut proposal, Eddie feels he couldn’t have afforded to play in this climate due to his young family.
- The Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Who will come out on top of this CFL/XFL deal – Randy Ambrosie or The Rock? At press time, over 70% of respondents voted for The Rock.
- In Hour 2 and the Second Half Kickoff we were joined by Winnipeg ICE broadcaster Mitch Peacock. He explained he’s staying in an AIRBNB while the team is in the UofR bubble. Mitch has been impressed by the calibre of play of the seven teams – it’s been better than he expected with shortened training camp and no preseason – and also discussed the play of leading scorer Peyton Krebs. He said Krebs isn’t dejected about returning from Henderson/Vegas and will make the best of any situation he faces. Regarding a new arena for the Winnipeg ICE, Peacock said ground hasn’t been broken yet but that’s probably a good thing since Covid specifications may change arena design. Somehow or another the topic of Subway sponsoring the Dub Hub came up and viewers were asked for their favourite Subway subs. Rod’s is roast beef loaded with jalapeños and secret sauce while Mitch Peacock and Moose opted for the Meatball sub. Many viewers mentioned the BMT.
- Skycron’s Cory Carlick joined the show to discuss his program Go Nitro which debuts on Game+ Network Monday at 8:30 pm ET/6:30 pm MT. It’s a combo of Jackass & Super Dave Osbourne and Cory revealed that Rod will be appearing in an upcoming episode involving an unnamed NFL team!
