MONDAY RUNDOWN: MATTHEW BARNABY, KEN REID, OVIE TALK & MORE!

We opened our third week of our residency at Grey Eagle Resort & Casino in Calgary with Episode #705 of The RP Show – Daytime Sports & Entertainment Talk – on Monday! Read on for the rundown:

  • RP and Moose Dupont broke with tradition in The Warmup, getting it going with Sunday’s NHL one-timers (games recap) and then spent the entirety of the segment on the backlash Washington Capitals star Alexander Ovechkin has faced for not condemning Russian leader Vladimir Putin. Rod said Ovechkin is in a pinch, noting that speaking out against Putin could put him and his family in danger. The host feels unless fans and media have been in Ovie’s shoes, they should pipe down. Moose agreed that the Caps forward is in a tight spot.
  • In Segment 2 the guys debated other hot sports topics including Russia being banned from world competitions, the NFL Scouting Combine opening this week, Raptors play and the potential of the Calgary Flames moving their AHL team to Calgary from Stockton, CA.
  • Sportsnet anchor Ken Reid joined the show from Toronto and, being a staunch Blue Jays follower, blasted MLB and the players for the ongoing lockout. Monday’s slate of MLB preseason games were scrubbed and Reid said the league is doing itself grave harm. He also noted that the Jays and their fans are missing out on a great opportunity with The Kids: Guerrero Jr., Bichette and Biggio. Ken also told tales of being mistaken for Alpine Skiing great Ken Read.
  • In Hour 2 for Great Western Original 16 Beer we were joined by 843 NHL game veteran and super pest Matthew Barnaby. He was planning a comeback in pro hockey for the sole purpose of fighting Sean Avery but after Avery was released by the ECHL’s Orlando Solar Bears, the whole plan went up in smoke. Barney didn’t want to divulge which team he planned to sign with, saying only it was in the Solar Bears’ division. Barnaby also discussed the upcoming Ice Wars hockey fighting championship in New Jersey planned by Danbury Trashers co-owner A.J. Galante. Matthew said he would never fight in it, but supports the event and would like to attend. Rod said perhaps the two could be the broadcasters for the event!
  • The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Which niche sport/league is the best – NLL, Auto Racing, Junior Hockey or CEBL? At press time, Junior Hockey was leading.
  • Friday’s Rockstar of the Day for RoxDar Supply Chain Solutions was Olympic Bobsleigh pilot Justin Kripps. Monday’s was Matthew Barnaby.
