MONDAY RUNDOWN: NFL WEEK 1 RECAP AND STANLEY CUP TALK

We kicked off a brand new week with Episode #317 of The RP Show! Here are the highlights:

  • Rod and Dupes opened with The Warmup covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) NFL Week 1 takeaways, 2) “The Call” in the Cowboys/Rams game and Mike McCarthy blowing it in his Dallas debut, 3) Tom Brady/Cam Newton performances, 4) A Monday Night Football doubleheader with Steelers/Giants followed by Titans/Broncos, 5) NHL Western Conference Game 6 Monday night with Dallas looking to eliminate Vegas, and 6) Weekend leftovers: The Raptors are out, the Blue Jays keep winning and Mighty Heart wins the Queen’s Plate.
  • TSN NHL Insider Darren Dreger joined the show from Toronto and predicts that the Islanders and Golden Knights aren’t dead yet. He figures both conference finals will be extended. Dregs also figured Tampa Bay forward Brayden Point is the clubhouse leader for the Conn Smythe Award as Playoff MVP. The Langenburg, SK product also explained the situation in Ottawa with coaches not being paid, and said Golden Knights GM Kelly McCrimmon should’ve gotten more consideration for the GM of the Year Award. Regarding the sale of the Brandon Wheat Kings, Dreger – the former Voice of the Wheat Kings – said the franchise is in good hands with the Jacobson family. He also admitted running two franchises was too big of a task for Kelly McCrimmon and his sole focus is now on the Golden Knights.
  • The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Who was the top performer in Week 1 of the NFL season – Cam Newton, Josh Jacobs, Davante Adams or Gardner Minshew? At press time, Davante Adams was leading.
  • Hour 2 was broadcast on Facebook Live only and we were joined by Sportsnet’s Arash Madani. He wasn’t surprised by the poor showing of Kirk Cousins in the Vikings opener. Arash also mentioned that the trend is to overpay at the QB position and it’s proving to not be a sound longterm strategy. He then related it to the CFL and reported there’s trouble brewing in BC with QB Mike Reilly not being paid by the Lions in the cancelled 2020 season.
  • RP figures an “NFL Canada” model may be the way to go for the CFL since the current owners’ plan seems to be simply asking large corporations for money to keep them afloat. That created a lengthy back-and-forth with viewers over how it would work. The host also said all CFL fans should be happy for former Bomber QB Chris Streveler who’s having success with the Arizona Cardinals. That should entice American players to come to Canada as a springboard to the NFL.
