MONDAY RUNDOWN: SUTTER, GURLEY & MORE!

Our Christmas break is behind us and we were back at it Monday with Episode #384 of The RP Show – Canada’s Daytime Sports Talk Show! Here’s the rundown:

  • Rod and Dupes got it going with The Warmup for Four Seasons Sports Palace covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) Canada is 2-0 at the World Juniors (so why are Canadian hockey fans grumpy?), 2) Was Canada’s Connor McMichael guilty of hotdogging with his between-the-legs move against Slovakia? (Rod and Dupes say no), 3) Week 16 NFL Notes, 4) The Bills will mollywhop the Patriots on Monday Night Football, 5) Is the NHL actually going to begin play with all seven Canadian teams playing out of their own cities?, and 6) CFL Notes: Trevor Harris signed a re-worked deal with Edmonton. Will he win a Grey Cup in his time there? Rod says yes.
  • The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Was Connor McMichael guilty of hotdogging? At press time over 75% of respondents said no.
  • RP Show NHL/WJHC insider Rich Sutter joined the show to discuss Montreal’s signing of Corey Perry, the Braydon Coburn-to-Ottawa deal, and the first three days of the World Juniors. Sutter agreed with Rod that Canada doesn’t need to be perfect in the round robin but admitted some bad habits have creeped into their game. He also feels it’s too soon to say who’s the best team in the tourney, particularly with the Czechs upsetting Russia 2-0 Sunday night. Rich examined the Braden Schneider one-game suspension and discussed Columbus’s prospects in the tourney (Sutter is a Blue Jackets pro scout).
  • Hour 2 was simulcast on Game+ TV and Facebook Live and we were joined by RP Show NFL insider Tori Gurley. He’s close friends with Trevor Harris and agreed that Edmonton is primed for much success with Harris and new head coach Scott Milanovich. Tori then delved into Week 16 outcomes and storylines and predicted QB Dwayne Haskins would be cut by Washington. Moments later, he was. Gurley said he “doesn’t trust” the Pittsburgh Steelers despite their monumental comeback against the Colts, and also said he’s not buying Cleveland Browns stock anytime soon. Viewers fired questions at Tori about a potential quarterback carousel in the off-season but Rod said we should wait till the playoffs are over for that discussion. Gurley delved into the emotional postgame speech by Texans DL J.J. Watt where he called out his teammates for lack of passion in their play. Tori feels Watt could be playing much better himself, and negates defensive assignments in order to notch another sack for his own totals.
  • A good portion of the show was dedicated to a back-and-forth with viewers but all things sports including the World Juniors, the NHL’s return to play, and CFL & NFL moves.
