MONDAY RUNDOWN: THE COMMISH! GARRICK JONES AND MORE
Monday was a watermark day for The RP Show – Canada’s Daytime Sports Talkshow – as Episode #412 was the first-ever to air for the full two hours on Game+ TV! Here’s the rundown:
- Rod and Dupes kicked it off with The Warmup for Four Seasons Sports Palace covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) The QB carousel in the CFL gets a spin, 2) The Trade – RP and Dupes think the Rams got the better in the Goff/Stafford deal with the Lions, 3) The Oilers 8-5 win over the Senators was the slump-buster that Edmonton needed, 4) The NY Rangers put Tony DeAngelo on waivers, 5) The Edmonton Football Team hires Jaime Elizondo as head coach, and 6) Team Global Ag Risk Solutions wins the SJHL’s Virtual Showcase over the weekend!
- NFL/CFL alum Garrick Jones – Commissioner of the Southern Developmental Football League in Texas – joined from Houston to break down all these things, and more. He agrees that Los Angeles won The Trade and explained how the Rams running out of patience with Jared Goff – and the 49ers with Jimmy Garoppolo – proves that the pressure to “win now” is even more intense in pro football than ever before. The Commish quipped, “This microwave mentality only ends up in microwave popcorn.” Regarding the Deshaun Watson situation, Garrick feels the Texans getting rid of Head Coach/GM Bill O’Brien was only the first step in sweeping changes that need to be made with a franchise that’s badly broken. Jones hopes Texans RB coach Danny Barrett stays with the club but admitted it’s too early to tell. He also predicts Chicago Bears assistant coach Henry Burris could be a head coach one day in the NFL. The pair played together with the Calgary Stampeders.
- The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Should a CFL team offer a tryout to 56-year old CFL alum Darin Burns? At press time, over 70% of respondents on Twitter said no.
- In Hour 2 we re-upped the Quick Six and were joined by Patrick Dees, the Gaming Officer of the new Fan Controlled Football League out of Atlanta. Dees went into great detail of how the league will kickoff on February 13 out of a hub in Atlanta and the biggest name on the field will be QB Johnny Manziel. CFL names Drew Tate, Don Unamba, John Jenkins and Khalil Carter are coaches in the league, and NFL great Marshawn Lynch is one of the owners. Dees encouraged viewers to check out the league’s website at www.FCF.iu for more details, and to check out the rosters and uniforms.
- 3DownNation CFL Insider John Hodge joined the show from Winnipeg to breakdown the weekend’s CFL moves and admitted 3Down saw it coming since they’ve been covering the Argos/RedBlacks QB story for weeks. He said it was all triggered by Jeremiah Masoli re-signing with the Ticats. Between that and Zach Collaros re-doing his deal with Winnipeg, Hodge said there was only so many teams for Nick Arbuckle and Matt Nichols to go. He feels the only wildcard left is McLeod Bethel-Thompson who opted out of his 2020 contract to play in The Spring League. Hodge then predicted what’s next in the CFL, including the chances of Charleston Hughes signing with Toronto.
