MONDAY SHOW RECAP: FOLEY, KORNEGAY AND MORE!
Monday was a big news day in the sports world and we covered it all with a huge guest list on Episode #265 of The RP Show! Here are the highlights:
- Rod and Dupes opened with The Rollout for Flooring Superstores covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) QB Cam Newton signs a 1-year deal with the Patriots, 2) Patriots fined $1.1M and a 3rd round pick for their latest Spy-Gate, 3) Christion Jones Tweets getting him released by the Eskimos, 4) NHL Draft Lottery fallout, 5) Canadiens goalie Carey Price says he needs more info before voting on the NHL’s Return To Play, and 6) A potential for “NFL Canada” to replace the CFL.
- Rod mentioned that he floated the NFL Canada notion on TSN 1290 Winnipeg radio Monday morning and host Jim Toth predicted cars would hit the ditch upon fearing the theory. The topic was a theme throughout the show and RP said that it may become the best option if the CFL can’t play, its business is faltering, and perhaps it’s time to stop competing with the NFL and join forces. It proved to be a hot-button topic.
- Sportsnet’s Arash Madani joined the show from his downtown Toronto condo and reported that the only option being considered by the CFL at the moment for returning to play is the one Hub City concept. The panel debated whether it was even possible due to financial constraints. Madani then wondered why CFL player salaries are even being discussed when league GMs, Presidents and the like are earning far bigger salaries than the league can afford. Arash discussed the Blue Jays scrambling to get ready for a training camp for a 60-game season and said while sports shouldn’t be a priority at this time due to public health concerns, he’s in favour of a Return To Play because we’re in the Sports & Entertainment business.
- 2-time Grey Cup champion and CFL All Star Tad Kornegay joined the show from New York City to discuss all these topics. He’s in favour of NFL Canada and said that it would be very attractive for young American players. Thadito explained why he’s nicknamed the “Grey Cup Kid” (he played in the CFL championship game in five of six seasons as a member of the Riders, Lions and Stampeders) and said he’d love to be featured on a 30 For 30 on the story. Kornegay runs a cleaning solution business and reported sales are up 300% during the pandemic!
- The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Does the signing of Cam Newton make the Patriots a Super Bowl contender? At press time around 70% of respondents said no.
- 3-time Grey Cup champion Ricky Foley joined the show from the Toronto area and had harsh criticism for CFL Commissioner Randy Ambrosie. He admitted it’s not personal because he’s never met Ambrosie, but he hasn’t been comfortable with the direction of the CFL since even before the pandemic. Ricky then answered viewer questions which led to a crazy story about Adriano Belli, and explained his bitter exit from Riderville in 2014. He felt the Riders went back on their deal.
- Sportsnet anchor Ken Reid joined the show to discuss the Hockey Hall of Fame induction class and why Theoren Fleury’s getting hosed. He said he has no better idea than anyone else when Sportsnet will get back to regularly-scheduled programming and agreed the classic game broadcasts are getting stale. As a sports card enthusiast, Ken discussed the recent sale of a Connor McDavid rookie card for $130,000.
- The guys revealed that The RP Show is scheduled to make its national TV debut on Game+ Network on Thursday. Check with your cable subscriber for availability in your area.
