MONDAY SHOW RECAP: FOOTBALL & HORSE RACING!
The guest list for Episode #255 of The Rod Pedersen Show was an eclectic group! Here are the highlights:
- Rod and Dupes opened with The Rollout for Flooring Superstore covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) Recap of our weekends, 2) CFL Randy Ambrosie told TSN he “remains optimistic” there will be a 2020 season, 3) NBA stars Kyrie Irving and Dwight Howard are against returning to play, 4) Roger Goodell admits “We were wrong” but will Colin Kaepernick ever play in the NFL again?, 5) What’s next for the CFL? (Salary cap concerns, voiding contracts, etc.), and 6) Examining various sports options including PGA, Nascar, UFC, soccer and more.
- Football Canada President Jim Mullin joined the show from Vancouver for a very informative chat on Canada West’s cancellation of the fall sports schedule, including football. Mullin said the decision’s been tough on families and he “wishes they’d taken it a little bit further” before pulling the plug. Regarding the notion that as many as six schools will play non-conference games in 2020, Jim stated that “doesn’t do the sport any good”. Mullin answered several questions from viewers and explained high school football isn’t under the jurisdiction of Football Canada but his governing body has an association with the CJFL.
- Blue Bombers great Troy Westwood of TSN 1290 Winnipeg joined the show and explained they haven’t had any problems coming up with sports talk on their station despite the pandemic. Troy also went into great detail on why he loathed the CFL’s U.S. Expansion effort (the conditions at American stadiums were abhorrent), his hatred for Donald Trump and many more entertaining takes.
- In Hour 2 the panel looped back on the Quick Six show topics and then were joined by Jim Lawson, CEO of Woodbine Racetrack. Jim is the former Chairman of the CFL’s Board of Governors. He explained how they got back to horse racing amid the pandemic and all the regulations they had to follow. Jim promoted the new Dark Horse app where bettors can place wagers on Woodbine’s races, and that their Thursday night races air live on TSN (ironically taking the place of CFL’s Thursday Night Football for the time being). Lawson also got into the plight of the CFL and predicted it’ll be extremely difficult for them to play games in 2020 however he’s hoping for the best and offering any support they may require.
- Sportscaster Brian “The Snowman” Snow joined the show from Terre Haute, Indiana and broke the news that his family is relocating to North Carolina. The Snowman gave his take on COVID times in America, and answered questions from viewers. Asked why QB Cam Newton still doesn’t have a job despite NFL training camps getting ready to open, Brian proclaimed, “He’s finished”.
- News broke during the show that several Houston Texans and Dallas Cowboys have tested positive for Coronavirus including star running back Ezekiel Elliott, Rod quipped “That means he’ll be recovered in time for Week 1”.
- The guys also discussed Week 1 results from the CFL SIM (computer-simulation) schedule and some of the funny stories which came out of the game. The guys are gearing up for Week 2, and may even broadcast a game live.
- Near the end of the show RP brandished a T-shirt from the Swift Current Colts football team. He said it was a gift from Coach Murdoch from a school visit last year and he was waiting for a sunny day to bust it out.
- You can vote now on our Twitter poll for the Rockstar of the Day for RoxDar Supply Chain Solutions. At press time, Troy Westwood was leading. Friday’s vote was won by Daved Benefield.
- See you at 10 am MT on Tuesday on Facebook Live and RodPedersen.com/ListenLive!
