MONDAY SHOW RECAP: GENE MAKOWSKY AND CFL MEDIA JOIN!
We were back at it Monday for Episode #284 of Canada’s daytime sports talk show, the RP Show! Here are the highlights:
- Rod and Dupes opened with The Rollout for Flooring Superstores covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) Another weekend of bad news including the passings of Regis Philbin, Eddie Shack and more, 2) Two MLB games scheduled for Monday evening have been postponed due to a Covid outbreak on the Miami Marlins, 3) The Arizona Coyotes and GM John Chayka part ways, 4) The CFL and CFLPA extend the deadline for CBA talks and Farhan Lalji reports team staff have been told to prepare for a season with players going to Winnipeg beginning Sept. 14 (Rod questioned the source of the info and later so too would CFLPA President Solomon Elimimian), 5) CEBL Summer Series Day 2 action on Sunday saw Saskatchewan beat Niagara 96-79 and Fraser Valley down Edmonton 113-100. Monday’s doubleheader features Edmonton versus Ottawa and Hamilton against Guelph, and 6) The Blue Jays are 1-2 on the young season heading for Washington on Monday.
- Canadian Football Hall of Famer, Roughriders legend and Sask Party MLA Gene Makowsky joined the show from his home office to cover a variety of topics. Gene said he’d have been in a bind during his 17-year CFL career if faced with a situation like Covid, whatwith three kids and a mortgage. Gene’s three boys all play amateur football and he explained what he knows about their seasons for 2020. At Rod’s prompting, Gene applauded Saskatchewan’s handling of the pandemic under the guidance of Premier Scott Moe and top medical officials.
- RP mentioned his neighbours were building a deck before 7:00 am on Saturday and although it didn’t bother him since he was already up, it spawned the daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question of: What’s the appropriate time to begin the use of power tools on weekends – 6:00 am, 7:00 am, 8:00 am or 9:00 am? At press time, 9:00 am was leading however several write-in answers suggested “noon”.
- Hour 2 was broadcast on Facebook Live only and we were joined by 3DownNation Winnipeg Bureau Chief John Hodge. He too questioned Monday’s report of “positive CBA talks” and wonders what Plan B is in the event of a Covid outbreak like we’ve seen with the Marlins? Hodges reported that Winnipeggers are in favour of their city hosting the CFL, and explained how 3DownNation will generate content even if there’s no CFL season (there are plenty of Canadians in the NFL plus he’s following the U-Sports and CJFL scenes closely).
- Bubba O’Neil of CHCH-TV Hamilton joined the show and was critical of CFL Commissioner Randy Ambrosie for not being more visible during the pandemic. He also explained that CHCH has had no problem filling their sportscasts during the pandemic and that they have a lot more freedom than CTV and Global affiliates. Bubba also expressed his affection for Ticats owner Bob Young and said he hasn’t been able to get to the bottom of the rumour that Young is paying Ticats players during the pandemic.
- RP went on a variety of rants including “golf is the heroin of sports” and how sports executives do their best to influence the media.
- You can vote now on our Twitter poll for the Rockstar of the Day for RoxDar Supply Chain Solutions. At press time, Gene Makowsky was leading. Friday’s poll was won by New York sportscaster Julie Stewart-Binks.
