MONDAY SHOW RECAP: HORNETS’ JAY TRIANO JOINS!
We were back at it Monday with Episode #245 of The Rod Pedersen Show with some HUGE guests! Read on for the highlights:
- Rod and Dupes got it going with The Rollout for Flooring Superstore covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) An emotionally-charged weekend in the USA, 2) An update on the T.J. Jones situation (the CFLPA vetoed his contract with the Argos), 3) Don Cherry says the Boston Bruins are getting screwed by the NHL 24-team playoff format, 4) The CFL’s statement on racial unrest in the US, 5) MLB season to resume June 30?, and 6) The NLL is investigating venues as Quarantine Cities.
- The theme through the whole show was the T.J. Jones saga. The 6-year Canadian NFL veteran has had his $200,000 contract with the Argos torn up and is subject to the CFL’s rookie Canadian salary cap of $85,000. Rod said he spoke to Sam Giguere Monday morning, who came back to the CFL in 2013 after five NFL seasons. The Sherbrooke product stated that he WASN’T subject to the cap, but didn’t come back for $200,000 either (he signed with Hamilton for far less). Jones’ reps say their client will never play in the CFL if he’s subject to the cap.
- The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Should T.J. Jones be subject to the CFL Canadian rookie cap? Over 70% of Twitter respondents said no while the Facebook vote was more 50/50. R0d stated that he’s on the fence over which way it should go.
- Charlotte Hornets Assistant Coach Jay Triano – the former Head Coach of the Toronto Raptors – joined the show from Charlotte for a wide-ranging chat. He’s optimistic the NBA will get back to playing in 2020, and discussed the Hornets season so far. Triano talked about speaking at the L-I-T opening banquet years ago in Regina, the strength of the CEBL, and how he felt part of the Raptors NBA title as he helped guide Toronto in their transition phase.
- 3DownNation CFL Insider Justin Dunk joined the show from the GTA and said he feels T.J. Jones shouldn’t be subject to the cap. The guys spent a good deal of time on this. Justin also stated there’s optimism over the CFL playing this year but the biggest hurdle will be reaching an agreement between the CFL and the CFLPA.
- In Hour 2 the guys were joined by Hall of Famer Damon Allen who proposed a Canadian The Match Pro-Am between himself, Doug Flutie, Mike Weir and Brooke Henderson. Damon discussed breaking into the CFL with the Eskimos in 1985, the QB salary landscape in the 1990s and his holdout in 1996, and racial unrest in his home country. He gave some strong quotes on the matter.
- Snowboarder and CBC Olympics broadcaster Craig McMorris joined the show from his home in Whistler, BC. The proud Saskie gave an update on his life during the pandemic and reported his brother Mark spent the past two months in Hawaii. McMorris fielded many questions from viewers including his broadcasting highlight, remaining unbiased when broadcasting his brother’s competitions, and said the 3rd Annual McMorris fundraising gala is on hold.
- The guys updated the latest in Korean Baseball and Rod cheered that his Wyverns have moved out of last-place, moving past Dupes’ Eagles.
- The guys discussed the Stampeders simulated 27-23 preseason win over the Roughriders Saturday afternoon on Doug Flutie’s Maximum Football video game and said much more is planned for this season. They and the viewers had big fun debating the results, the QB rotation in the game, and observed that there’s a big appetite for simulated CFL games this summer.
- You can vote now on our Twitter poll for the RoxDar of the Day. At press time, Jay Triano was leading. Friday’s vote was won by Pinball Clemons. Rod reported that the winner or Friday’s vote over which CFL coach faces the most pressure in 2020 was won by Toronto’s Ryan Dinwiddie.
