Monday’s show was Episode #79 of The Rod Pedersen Show. Here are the highlights!

  • Rod and Dupes led off the show with The Warmup, discussing an incredibly busy weekend of sports. Darren was at the mic for Friday’s Rams/Dinos game on Canada West TV from Calgary, Saturday’s Raiders/Blades game in Saskatoon, and Sunday’s Huskies/Thunder game in Regina! Meanwhile Rod took in the Pats/Warriors game Friday in the Brandt Centre and did some work with the Battlefords North Stars on Saturday in their game against Estevan. They recapped Week 15 in the CFL and Week 3 in the NFL.
  • Riders/Bombers/Renegades alum Mike Abou-Mechrek joined the bunker next for a deep dive into Winnipeg’s 38-37 loss at Montreal on Saturday, the largest comeback victory in Alouettes history. Abou didn’t feel the loss is as catastrophic as people are making it out to be, and the simple fact is the Bombers are still a good team. Rod agreed that the regular season is for learning lessons, and Winnipeg has learned several of late.
  • Former Bomber LB Maurice Leggett joined the show via video chat from Winnipeg to discuss the “Montreal Meltdown” and said there are “too many mouths” involved in the Bomber defense. He gave his take on the psyche of the Winnipeg football club, and what it will take for them to right the ship and potentially win a Grey Cup. Leggett recently won an Arena Football League championship in Albany, but said he would welcome an opportunity to sign somewhere in the CFL.
  • A special treat came in Hour 2 when Rider great Chris Szarka joined the bunker! The Canuck Truck talked about his 14 seasons with the Green & White (1997-2010) and all the ups and downs the franchise went through in his time. He spoke glowingly of the Shivers/Barrett era, but explained how things changed under Tillman/Austin which led to the 2007 Grey Cup win. They discussed similarities between the 2019 Roughriders and the 2007 championship squad.
  • They also talked about what has to happen for the Bombers to once again become Grey Cup contenders, and how the Riders and Cody Fajardo should approach contract extension talks. “For all we know, they might’ve signed an extension already,” Szarka offered. He also gave an update on his life now, working across the prairies in the Oil & Gas Industry.
  • SJHL Nipawin Hawks Head Coach & GM Doug Johnson joined the show from the Showcase in Warman, SK to preview their Monday night game against Notre Dame. Johnson discussed the Hawks’ 4-0 start, and how only 3 players remain from their 2018 championship squad. He mentioned part of the reason for such a small number of returnees is that some players quit hockey after that season due to the Humboldt tragedy.
  • In honour of show #79, the guys recognized players who’ve worn number-79 in their careers and the group includes Andrei Markov, Alexei Yashin, Gary Lewis, Terrell Jurineack and Randy White.
  • The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Where does Antonio Brown play next: NFL, CFL, XFL or None of the Above? The majority of respondents voted for None of the Above.
