SHOW RECAP: BENEVIDES ON FOOTBALL FRIDAY!

Friday’s show was Episode #93 of The Rod Pedersen Show. Here are the highlights!

  • Rod and Dupes opened Football Friday with The Warmup, covering the morning’s hottest sports topics and previewing the CFL’s Friday Night Football doubleheader with Ottawa at Toronto and Saskatchewan at Calgary. They also covered Colin Kaepernick’s latest attempt to sign with an NFL team, Thursday’s NHL results and touched on the WHL and Canada West football (which is on a Thanksgiving bye week).
  • Hall of Fame Rider broadcaster John Lynch and RP Show Director of Scouting Craig Smith joined the bunker in Segment 2 and went deep into Friday’s match-up at McMahon Stadium. Lynch discussed Calgary QB Bo Levi Mitchell and feels Bo has a chip on his shoulder because he believes he should be a starter in the NFL.
  • Stampeders podcaster Ryan Ballantine joined the show via video chat from Cowtown for a Stampeders perspective on this first-place showdown and predicted a landslide Calgary victory! The guys discussed former Stamps QBs who’ve gone on to NFL stardom (Jeff Garcia, Doug Flutie, etc.) and where Bo could fit in. Tons of Stamps fans weighed in on the discussion via the Facebook comment feed.
  • Craig Smith offered his take on the Argos replacing Jim Popp with Pinball Clemons, and questioned whether Clemons is adequately prepared for the GM role. Smitty also gave his thoughts on the Zach Collaros trade and said Winnipeg basically has nothing to lose.
  • The CFL on TSN’s Mike Benevides joined the show from Toronto via video chat and very promptly received a barb from Smith (the pair worked together with the BC Lions). “I’m surprised you have your shirt on!” Smitty quipped. Benevides talked about the Sask/Calgary game and figures Charleston Hughes will eat up the Stamps O-Line which is missing Left Tackle Derek Dennis. Rumours abound that Benevides will be back coaching in the CFL in 2020 however he said he’s happy on the TSN panel at the moment.
  • The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Will Colin Kaepernick ever play pro football again? At press time, around 90% of respondents said no.
  • Vancouver Giants broadcaster Dan O’Connor joined the bunker for the last two segments to discuss Friday’s game in Moose Jaw and Saturday’s game in Regina. He said the Mosaic Place match-up will be charged up, with the Warriors welcoming back Braden Tracey from the Anaheim Ducks. He also feels Saturday’s Brandt Centre game will be special with the return of Pats alumni Mike Dyck and Jamie Heward. Both are on the Giants coaching staff.
  • In honour of show #93 the guys recognized players who’ve worn number-93 in their careers and the group includes Doug Gilmour, Dwight Freeney, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Don Oramasionwu, Ron Artest and Mitch Marner.
  • The RP Show returns on Tuesday at 10 am MT on Facebook Live and RodPedersen.com/ListenLive.
  • Happy Thanksgiving!
