OUT OF THE BLUE, WE ALL GOT SOME GREAT NEWS ON WEDNESDAY. NOW, WE’RE JUST HOPING THAT IT’S NOT FAKE NEWS.

HOCKEY FANS REJOICED WHEN THE WESTERN HOCKEY LEAGUE ISSUED A NEWS RELEASE STATING THE LEAGUE PLANS A RETURN TO PLAY, WITH A FULL 68-GAME SCHEDULE, BEGINNING OCTOBER 2ND.

OBVIOUSLY IT WAS LIKE CHRISTMAS FOR MY FRIENDS, WHO HOLD SEASON TICKETS TO THE PATS AND WARRIORS. THE EXCITEMENT WAS PARTICULARLY HIGH IN THE QUEEN CITY AS THIS MEANS WE’LL INDEED GET TO LAY EYES THIS FALL ON NUMBER-ONE OVERALL PICK CONNOR BEDARD OF THE PATS, WHO’S BEEN DEEMED THE WHL’S FIRST-EVER EXCEPTIONAL PLAYER.

BUT READ THE FINE PRINT. THE NEWS RELEASE STATED THAT THE DUB’S RETURN TO PLAY IS CONTINGENT ON GETTING THE GREENLIGHT FROM ALL THE PROPER HEALTH AND GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS.

IS THAT EASIER SAID THAN DONE?

THE LEAGUE ALSO ANNOUNCED ITS ORGANIZED SPECIAL TASK FORCES IN ALL SIX JURISDICTIONS (I.E. PROVINCES AND STATES) IN ORDER TO FOLLOW GUIDELINES LOCK-STEP.

IT’S DEFINITELY POSITIVE NEWS, YET SOME JUNIOR HOCKEY PEOPLE ARE STILL EXTREMELY CAUTIOUS, AND THEIR HEARTS ARE STILL BROKEN FROM LAST SEASON’S CANCELLATION. WITH UNIVERSITY SPORTS WIPED OUT AND THE CFL STILL IN LIMBO, SOME PEOPLE ARE STILL NERVOUS BUT JUNIOR HOCKEY’S RETURN.

ONE MIGHT ASK, “WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP MAKE THIS HAPPEN?” THE ANSWER WOULD BE TO KEEP FOLLOWING SOCIAL DISTANCING MEASURES AND WASH YOUR HANDS.

BUT IF YOU’RE LIKE MOST OF THE FARMERS AND RANCHERS I KNOW WHOSE LIFE HASN’T CHANGED ONE BIT SINCE THE PANDEMIC BEGAN, I’D SUGGEST THIS:

JUST CROSS YOUR FINGERS.

THAT’S TODAY’S ROD PEDERSEN COMMENTARY ON CAT COUNTRY 98.
