THURSDAY COMMENTARY – EVERYONE CAN DO SOMETHING

IMG_5201

(Listen daily for the Rod Pedersen Commentary at 9:50 am and 5:20 pm on Cat Country 98 FM)

I THOUGHT AT MY AGE, I’D BE PAST BEING BULLIED OR EVEN BEING TEASED.

BUT I GUESS NOT.

ON WEDNESDAY MY AGE GROUP CAME UP TO RECEIVE THE COVID VACCINE AT THE REGINA DRIVE-THRU CLINIC, WHICH IS IN THE SHADOW OF MOSAIC STADIUM.

GETTING THE SHOT HADN’T BEEN A HUGE PRIORITY FOR ME BUT MY FAMILY WAS URGING ME TO GO, AND I FOUND SOME FREE TIME IN THE AFTERNOON.

I WAS IN AND OUT WITHIN 30 MINUTES, AND THE NURSES WERE ACTUALLY IN A JOKING MOOD DESPITE LONG HOURS ON THE JOB DEALING WITH THE WHACKO PUBLIC.

THE YOUNG LADY TOLD ME TO TAKE A SELFIE AND PUT IT ON FACEBOOK. SO I DID.

WHILE MY VACCINATION RECEIVED A LOT OF SUPPORT, I WAS A LITTLE ASTONISHED BY THE SCORN WHICH CAME FROM STRANGERS AND EVEN MORE SHOCKED THAT SOME CAME FROM FRIENDS.

IT’S A SCAM THEY SAID. I’M SUPPORTING LOCKDOWNS THEY SAID. AND APPARENTLY I’M NOW A ROBOT.

NOOOOOOOO. I’M HALFWAY TO BEING FULLY VACCINATED AND FOR ME IT WAS A BIG STEP IN RETURNING TO NORMALCY.  WHEN THE BORDER OPENS, I’LL BE THE FIRST ONE HEADED TO FLORIDA, ARIZONA AND VEGAS.

LOOK – I’M FUZZY ON THE ORIGIN OF CORONAVIRUS. I’M NOT SURE I BELIEVE IT’S RANDOM. I HATE THAT SPORTS & ENTERTAINMENT HAVE BEEN WIPED OUT AROUND HERE. AND I THINK COVID RESTRICTIONS ARE EXCESSIVE. (MY HEALTH PROFESSIONAL FRIENDS AGREE THEY ARE EXCESSIVE BUT SAY PEOPLE ARE IDIOTS AND THEY NEED TO PROTECT ALL FROM THE FEW).

BUT I’M NOT IGNORANT ENOUGH TO THINK THIS VIRUS ISN’T SERIOUS. I’M ON RECORD AS SAYING I DON’T WANT IT AND FOR A YEAR, I’VE SUCCESSFULLY DODGED IT.

MY FRIENDS ACROSS THE COUNTRY ARE JEALOUS THAT I GOT THE SHOT AND SAY THEIR PROVINCE IS WOEFULLY BEHIND.

I WANT TO GET BACK TO NORMAL, FOR EVERYONE, AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AND THIS WAS A WAY TO DO IT.

NO ONE CAN DO EVERYTHING TO HELP OUT RIGHT NOW. BUT EVERYONE CAN DO SOMETHING.

THAT’S TODAY’S ROD PEDERSEN COMMENTARY.

You must back up all of your claims with evidence, proof, and facts. You provided only conjecture, hearsay, and rumour, the same as your television, and government. Freedom of choice. Live and let live. I’ll debate anyone, anytime, publicly, online, or in a courtroom, as per the merits of this tyranny. For something this catastrophic to humanity, and not have one single debate, should be enough to raise an eyebrow. Tell me why other countries haven’t worn masks at all? No lockdowns across the world, in many nations. Of course that’s all censored. This is beyond obvious, and in plain… Read more »

Hi Rod. With social media, and the polarization created by dissenting opinions, general mistrust of the government bodies involved, and being able to view the way various countries have handled this pandemic,it does not surprise me the heckling and disparagement you received. The only way some people learn is by a trial by fire. Oh well. A person can be smart, but people are stupid. I heard yesterday that Colby Cave’s widow was leaving social media, at least for a while, because of the trolls that were harassing her. In her words, she was afraid to pick up her phone… Read more »

You definitely have freedom of choice to get it and all the power to you. You have to be comfortable living your life, good for you. Just let the people that don’t want it make their choice too. So far, there has been no indication that getting the vaccine will make any difference in getting back to normal or even saving yourself from still getting the virus. Maybe once there is, more people will start to get it. As for now, I’m out. I’m confident in my own immune system, I’ll continue to eat healthy, exercise and take my vitamins.

how about thinking of others instead of yourself, its not all about you. Taking the vaccine is equally about protecting others but I guess you would never see that.

Like I said, getting the vaccine doesn’t stop me from the virus (as per the CDC, not me). I think of others by looking after my immune system, therefore not overwhelming the hospitals and staying home if I have any symptoms. That’s ok if you aren’t comfortable with that. We have freedom of choice, it’s wonderful thing.

Yup and in terms of a virus; it is that mindset a scumbag like you would be the type to contract HIV which is a virus. It is preventable similar to Covid-19, yet because of perceived freedom of choice you will opt not to use protection and most likely not tell any partner. Hence we now have bill boards up normalizing HIV and that people can live with it.

Thanks Leland, thanks for sharing your opinion. You are entitled to it, if you want to meet for coffee I’m up for it. I never said I go around spreading my germs, I said I look after myself. I know not everyone wants to do that, feel free not to, what do I care.

You have it backwards. Things go back to normal after infections go down. That’s after enough people get vaccinated. You want the prize first, and for everyone else to do the work!

Exactly, but you would think that cases would be going down since vaccines have been introduced, but they haven’t, they’ve only increased. I know people who have received the vaccine, but have tested positive for the virus again. So we’re no further ahead.

That just means it’s easier to spread the virus than to get vaccinated. No surprise there – most people haven’t been sick or gotten vaccinated yet. As for your friends who got vaccinated and then got the virus, did they die? Long term health problems? It seems not but again that’s what vaccines do – lessen symptoms if you do get exposed. Anyway, best of luck to you and I hope more people follow Rod’s path than yours. We can’t all be free riders. Meanwhile the vaccinated (not me yet, but only because my time hasn’t been called) will silently… Read more »

I would argue a strong immune system does the exact same thing, lessens your symptoms if you get a virus, so what’s the difference to you? I also know people (not vaccinated) that have got covid without many symptoms at all, recovered in a couple days, no effects since either. They took vitamin D and zinc, both have been proven as something to overcome this virus. I know for some people it can be a different story and I agree it’s tough, but it’s definitely not the majority. I also have experience with a family member being in the covid… Read more »

This is the BIGGEST PROBLEM. People do not respect the other’s position. Those who think the pandemic is a hoax attack those who think it is deadly serious and those who think it is deadly serious attack those who think it is a hoax. Both sides will present their facts to support their stance. RESPECT the other’s opinion, everyone has one and is entitled to one. It is not the last thing we will disagree about.

Right on point Rod. Those that feel “it’s a scam” or are protesting pandemic restricts have not come face to face with reality. If you acquire this virus the probability that your health will permanently be affected is significant. The risk of death due to Covid complications is real, it is happening every day in our province. Each of us must do everything we are capable of to protect ourselves and others. Thanks for calling like it is as always Rod. Take care & be well!

Please provide me a link on the significant permanent effects. Not mocking your statement but I am interested in your source.

That is EXACTLY my take on the Covid-19 matter. The measures might be too harsh but they are there because some people won’t listen and don’t care.

I remember one of the first days of the original lockdown there was a girl at work that was saying that there was no way she was going to get locked down, she wasn’t scared of the virus and she was just going to do what she wanted as always. Well, with that attitude, here we are, 1 year later.

I have said all along, the vaccine is to counter idiots out there. If everyone followed the rules from the start and did what they are supposed to, we would be over this. But instead some people still think they dont have to follow government rules and it infringes on their rights. Go ahead party your a## off, hang out in large groups and infect others who are trying to follow rules. This thing spreads easily and to stick ones head in the sand and think you are invincible reminds me of a teenager that is too immature to know… Read more »

If anyone gets a chance listen to the Joe Rogan Experience where he interviews amateur wrestling icon Dan Gable. He sums up all these wok movement, social justice warrior, politically correct people are flat out losers. They love to go online in their social media echo chambers and boss people around simply because they can. These people are losers. 12 hours a day on social media and reading internet pages there is no way they can accomplish anything. Always consider the source as they are low achieving, accomplish nothing, and lack character. I cancelled social media 2 yrs ago and… Read more »

rod, wow, i think that everything you have written shows some balls, or, as people in other corners of the psyche might say, vulnerability. while i was not necessarily eager to get the shot, i did so on sunday – the nurse i was with was great, and though the line-up was long, the set-up felt pretty well-organized and efficient – shall i thank tommy douglas for that? maybe! in any case, i feel privileged to have gotten it at all, when so many others in this messed up world we live in might never even get that chance, or… Read more »
