IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN WHERE WE START TURNING OUR ATTENTION TO THE LABOUR DAY CLASSIC.

MANY OF YOU DID AS EARLY AS LAST WEEK.

WHAT NUMBER OF LABOUR DAY CLASSIC IS IT ANYWAY? 58? 59? IT’S A LOT.

IT’S AMAZING TOO THAT NEVER BEFORE IN THE HISTORY OF THE ROUGHRIDERS AND BLUE BOMBERS HAVE BOTH TEAMS BEEN 3-0 AT THE SAME TIME.

THE SAME IS TRUE THIS YEAR AS THE BOMBERS COME IN AT 3-1 WHILE THE RIDERS ARE 3-0.

A QUICK CHECK OF THE NUMBERS TELLS YOU THE ROUGHRIDERS HAVE THE CFL’S #1 OFFENSE WHILE THE BOMBERS HAVE THE #1 DEFENSE. IT’S THE MOST POINTS SCORED AGAINST THE FEWEST POINTS ALLOWED.

FOR ME, THAT’S WHERE IT BEGINS AND ENDS.

BUT YOU’VE GOT THE QUARTERBACK BATTLE OF FAJARDO VERSUS COLLAROS TOO; BOTH GUYS I LOVE. THE TEAMS HAVEN’T MET SINCE THE 2019 WEST FINAL AND THE VAUNTED “GOAL POST” SITUATION WHICH FOILED THE RIDERS’ GREY CUP BID AND SENT WINNIPEG ON THE WAY TO ENDING THEIR CHAMPIONSHIP DROUGHT.

BOMBER RUNNING BACK ANDREW HARRIS LOBBED THE FIRST SHOT OVER THE BORDER WEDNESDAY WHEN HE SAID THERE’S NOTHING BETTER THAN SHUTTING UP 30-THOUSAND RIDER FANS ON LABOUR DAY WEEKEND.

I’D HAVE HAD SOMETHING TO SAY ABOUT THAT BACK IN THE DAY, BUT NOW I JUST SMILE IN AMUSEMENT.

I’M CHEERING FOR BOTH TEAMS, WHICH I NEVER THOUGHT POSSIBLE.

THE RIDERS ARE FAVOURED BY 4.5-POINTS BUT I THINK IT’LL BE CLOSER THAN THAT. BUT THEY’LL STILL WIN.

THE BANJO BOWL WILL BE ANOTHER STORY.

THAT’S TODAY’S ROD PEDERSEN COMMENTARY
