THURSDAY COMMENTARY: ONE FOR THE OLD GUYS

Some random thoughts on this Thursday …

#1 – I heard it once that hockey was invented to give Canadians something to do in the winter. But when your team sucks, it can make the cold unbearable.

Cue what’s going on in Calgary now as the Flames lost their sixth in a row Wednesday night, 4-3 to the visiting Dallas Stars.

Rookie coach Ryan Huska had a big mess to clean up and it was never going to happen overnight. He said afterwards “the only way out of this is together”, and he’s right.

That includes the fans, although those players really need to grow up.

#2 – Another great adage is that in Saskatchewan, there are two seasons: Rider season, and winter.

The first guy I ever heard that from was Roger Aldag.

But that wind howls just a little bit louder when the Riders miss the playoffs.

I’m sure the team is happy the trail’s gone cold on who their new coach will be, as there hasn’t as much speculation this week, as there was last.

No matter who it is, they’ll get somebody good.

But he’ll be facing a task similar to what Ryan Huska is in Calgary and, don’t look now, but June is a long seven months away.

Top up that Netflix subscription.

And #3 – Another sure sign of winter is that the baseball season ended Wednesday night. The Texas Rangers won their first World Series in franchise history, blanking Arizona 5-0 at Chase Field to take the series in a tidy five games.

With not much else on, I tuned in for the game but wouldn’t you know it, it was a defensive gem. Purists love that, but I do not. I prefer action.

But digging a little more into it, it’s the fourth World Series title for Texas manager Bruce Bochy (he won three prior with San Fran).

At age 68, score one for the old guys there.

Score another one for the Roughriders Old Boys Club as they got their way once again in keeping Cabana Boy O’Day. When the Riders Old Boys Club says jump or beg like a dog O’Day does just that. It’s going to be a mighty long three years of desperate lean times in Riderville. When will someone in that organization wake up and smell the roses for the betterment of that football franchise?

junior, instead of harping on ODay maybe put that energy against that doufus Reynolds. He is the responsible one and who rehired ODay. Channel that frustration to who deserves it most. Reynolds.

I did not watch any baseball this year, but Texas is interesting. Bruce Bochy and Dusty Baker both made their respective AL Finals. – 68 years old and Dusty is 74. It still shows a steady hand and managing personalities is what it comes down too. First time I recall Bruce Bochy – he was a Catcher and he was the other Catcher not named Ray Fosse that Peter Edward Rose ran right over in a playoff game. Pete literally blasted his a$$ into the bleachers. After that Bruce Bochy was the first manager to take the adage of “let… Read more »

Like the Riders, Calgary moved a few deck chairs around and expect a turnaround – good luck to both teams.
Btw – O’Day found talented receivers – great! Maybe build your lines first.
Treliving continues to fail upward – good luck to the Leafs
