THURSDAY COMMENTARY – WIN/WIN

(Listen daily for the Rod Pedersen Commentary on Cat Country 98 FM & Rock 98.5 FM)

WE HAVE A SERIES.

ACTUALLY WE HAVE TWO.

BOTH THE STANLEY CUP SEMIFINALS WILL GO AT LEAST FIVE GAMES FOLLOWING MONTREAL’S 3-2 WIN AT VEGAS WEDNESDAY NIGHT. THAT AFFAIR’S TIED 1-1, AS IS THE NEW YORK ISLANDERS/TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING BEST OF 7.

CLEARLY, AS A STAUNCH GOLDEN KNIGHTS FAN, I WAS NOT IN FAVOUR OF WEDNESDAY’S RESULT HOWEVER I WAS IN FAVOUR OF CAREY PRICE STANDING ON HIS HEAD AGAIN.

THE MONTREAL GOALTENDER IS THE GREATEST GOALIE OF OUR TIME. TO BE FRANK, I LOATHED A MONTREAL-VEGAS MATCH-UP BECAUSE I DIDN’T WANT TO HAVE TO CHEER AGAINST CAREY.

BUT HERE WE ARE.

IT FEELS LIKE THE ANAHIM LAKE, BC PRODUCT AND FORMER TRI-CITY AMERICAN HAS BEEN AROUND FOREVER BUT AT AGE 33, PRICE HAS A LOT OF YEARS LEFT.

AND THEY’LL ASSUREDLY BE SPENT WITH MONTREAL AFTER THIS REMARKABLE RUN THE HABS ARE ON. ARE THEY A FLASH IN THE PAN? OR IS THIS THE START OF A YEARS-LONG TREND OF THE CANADIENS BEING A CONTENDER?

WHO KNOWS BUT CAREY PRICE REMAINS THE CORNERSTONE OF IT ALL AND FINALLY G-M MARC BERGEVIN HAS ADDED ENOUGH UP FRONT THAT CAREY DOESN’T HAVE TO GO INTO “GOD-MODE” EVERY GAME IN ORDER TO WIN.

IN FACT ON WEDNESDAY HE WASN’T OVERLY SPECIAL. HE MADE 29 SAVES AND A LOT OF THEM WERE GREAT, BUT VEGAS CAN LOOK IN THE MIRROR FOR WHY THEY WERE UNABLE TO GO UP 2-NOTHING IN GAMES.

THEY COULDN’T SCORE ON THE POWERPLAY, THEY COULDN’T HIT THE NET, AND STAR MAX PACIORETTY HAD A HOLE IN HIS STICK.

IT HAPPENS. BUT THE CANADIENS ARE HEADING HOME TO MONTREAL AT DEAD EVEN, WHICH IS A LOT MORE THAN MOST PEOPLE CAN SAY AFTER SPENDING A FEW DAYS IN VEGAS.

I STILL HAVE THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS TO WIN THIS SERIES IN SIX BUT AS I SAID, IT’S HARD TO CHEER AGAINST CAREY PRICE.

SO NO MATTER HOW IT TURNS OUT, IT LOOKS TO ME LIKE A WIN/WIN.

Agreed it’s very hard to cheer against Carey Price. This guy is inching into the Hasek realm and that’s really the best compliment I can give. All he needs is 1 goal then he takes over and dominates. I was surprised then impressed when they said all 9 Montreal playoff wins have happened when they score first. After that he just locks the door and even in that last 3 minute flurry it’s as close to automatic they will win. Islanders on the other side is is equally impressive, and how can anyone here cheer against Jordan Eberle. They got… Read more »

Tradition has shown that a hot goaltender can carry a team a long way in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Hopefully Carey Price can accomplish such a feat and bounce the Vegas Golden Knights out of contention.
