THURSDAY COMMENTARY – YOU CAN’T FIX STUPID

WELP. THAT DIDN’T LAST LONG.

JUST A FEW HOURS AFTER THE SJHL ANNOUNCED DARREN DUPONT AND I’D BE IN YORKTON THIS FRIDAY FOR THE GAME OF THE MONTH BROADCAST BETWEEN THE TERRIERS AND WEYBURN RED WINGS, THE LEAGUE ANNOUNCED IT’S SUSPENDING PLAY INDEFINITELY DUE TO THE PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT’S NEW COVID CONTROLS.

AS EXPECTED, COACHES ARE FURIOUS. PLAYERS, FANS AND MEDIA ARE SPEECHLESS.

YOU LISTEN TO THIS COMMENTARY EVERYDAY SO YOU’VE BEEN FOLLOWING HOW SJHL WORKERS MOVED MOUNTAINS THIS FALL TO COMPLY WITH THE 150-SPECTATOR CAP, AND PROVIDE A SAFE ENVIRONMENT FOR THEIR PLAYERS, STAFF, OFFICIALS AND FANS.

AS IT TURNS OUT, IT NEVER MATTERED.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO LOOK FAR. SOME TEAMS HAVE OPENLY QUESTIONED THE GOVERNMENT ON SOCIAL MEDIA ON HOW THEY COULD DO THIS TO THEM?

THE NIPAWIN HAWKS EVEN WENT SO FAR AS TO SAY COACH JOHNSON’S TAKING HIS PLAYERS TO THE BARS AND CASINOS BECAUSE AT LEAST THEY’RE STILL OPEN, UNLIKE HOCKEY GAMES.

THE HAWKS SUFFERED SOME BACKLASH FROM FANS WHO THOUGHT COACH DOUG JOHNSON WAS SERIOUS.

BUT YOU CAN’T FIX STUPID.

SO THE LEAGUE IS ON HIATUS AT LEAST UNTIL AFTER CHRISTMAS. YOU REALLY HAVE TO WONDER WHAT’S GOING TO HAPPEN WHEN AND IF THESE MEASURES DON’T HAVE THE DESIRED EFFECT.

WE’VE LEARNED A LOT THROUGH THIS JOURNEY TOGETHER, AND ONE THING IS THAT NO AMOUNT OF FOOT-STOMPING OR COMPLAINING IS GOING TO CHANGE THE GOVERNMENT’S MIND.

IT CAN’T BE STOPPED.

THAT’S TODAY’S ROD PEDERSEN COMMENTARY ON CAT COUNTRY 98.
