THURSDAY RUNDOWN: CFL, NHL AND HORSE RACING!

We covered the gamut on Episode #301 of The Rod Pedersen Show, Canada’s daytime sports talk show! Here are the highlights:

  • Rod and Dupes opened with The Rollout for Flooring Superstores covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) It was Moving Day Wednesday in the Stanley Cup Playoffs with Colorado, Tampa Bay and Boston moving on to Round Two, 2) What’s the best first round series? (RP says it’s Flyers/Canadiens while Dupes feels it’s Canucks/Blues), 3) CFL players are to be eligible for C.E.W.S., 4) The Stampeders release LB Nate Holley to pursue NFL opportunities (are there more to come?), 5) Body cam footage has been released of the altercation in Golden State with Raptors President Masai Ujuri, and 6) The Blue Jays sweep the Orioles.
  • The crew covered many more sports topics including QB Cam Newton chirping the Patriots defense in training camp, and NBC’s Pierre McGuire trolling the Maple Leafs saying “you shouldn’t build your team on analytics”. Dupes and Producer Clark agreed it doesn’t look good on the Leafs that Nazam Kadri is moving on to Round 2 with the Avalanche, and scored two goals in the series-clincher.
  • Woodbine Entertainment Chairman Jim Lawson – the former Chair of the CFL Board of Governors – joined the show from Toronto for a wide-ranging chat. He discussed being teammates with Tim Hunter in the AHL (Hunter appeared in Hour 2), broke the news that the 161st Queen’s Plate will be run on September 12 and fans can wager on the Darkhorse App, and examined the CFL season cancellation. Lawson predicted months ago there would be no season and said “a lot of work” is ahead for the CFL to come back stronger.
  • The Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Why do you watch the RP Show – Hockey coverage, Football coverage, RP’s Rants or Other? At press time, Football coverage was leading by a large margin.
  • Hour 2 was broadcast on Facebook Live only and we were joined by NHL vet and former Moose Jaw Warriors coach Tim Hunter from his cottage. Hunter discussed the rough-and-tumble days of the AHL and lacing ’em up with Jim Lawson. Hunter said his favourite first round series has been Tampa Bay/Columbus, and explained why former Warrior Brayden Point has a penchant for scoring OT goals in the playoffs.
  • New York sportscaster Julie Stewart-Binks joined the show while on vacation in Toronto and detailed getting into Canada from New York. The former CTV Regina sportscaster feels Canadians are much looser with Covid controls than New Yorkers. She said the pandemic has wreaked much more havoc on NCAA Football than it has the NFL, and she’s watching the situation closely. JSB also renewed acquaintances with famed former CBC newscaster Costa Maragos who’s launching his new show In Real Time With Costa Maragos Thursday at 7:00 pm MT on Facebook Live.
  • You can vote now on our Twitter poll for the Rockstar of the Day for RoxDar Supply Chain Solutions. At press time, Tim Hunter was leading. Wednesday’s vote was won by Nik Lewis.
