We’re in the thick of the hockey season and we were joined by two NHL’ers on Thursday’s Episode #395 of The RP Show – Canada’s Daytime Sports Talk Show! Here’s the rundown:

  • Rod and Dupes opened with The Warmup covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) The #1 topic in news and sports is American political rest but we’re not touching it, 2) The Raptors are 1-6 after a 123-115 loss in Phoenix, 3) What was happening in 2002 when the Cleveland Browns last made the NFL Playoffs? (Nickelback’s How You Remind Me and Keith Urban’s Somebody Like You were #1 on the charts and Lord Of The Rings: 2 Towers was #1 at the box office), 4) NHL training camp notes, 5) Would a 50/50 fundraiser work for the CFL?, and 6) Rod finds inspiration from the Spittin’ Chiclets hosts and Pat McAfee because they’ve proven you can find an audience digitally and be successful by “just being yourself”.
  • Winnipeg Jets radio colour commentator Jamie Thomas joined the show from the Jets practice facility to outline all the team storylines that DON’T revolve around Patrik Laine. They include line combos, rebuilding the blueline, a follow-up season for Connor Hellebuyck, and getting over the Play-In Round loss to the Flames.
  • The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Are the Raptors as bad as their record? At press time over 60% of respondents said yes.
  • Hour 2 was simulcast on Game+ TV and Facebook Live and after re-upping the Quick Six, we were joined by NY Islanders and Regina Pats legend and Hockey Hall of Famer Clark Gillies from Long Island. The Moose Jaw product said he lost some bets on USA winning the World Juniors. Regarding being informally voted Saskatchewan’s toughest-ever NHL’er, Clark said he only fought to defend his teammates and had only 55 career fights in 14 seasons. He admitted that he wore finally wore a helmet in his last season in Buffalo because young bucks were taking runs at him. Regarding the outlook for the Islanders this year, Gillies said the team has to be considered a Stanley Cup contender and is very excited about the new facility the team is moving into next year. He invited Rod down to enjoy some games from his friends’ luxury suites.
  • The crew got into a debate with viewers over who’s the biggest guest to ever appear on the show? Is it Don Cherry, Paul Bissonnette or someone else? Everyone chimed in with their own thoughts and said all guests are great in their own way. RP said historically, Don Cherry is probably #1.
  • News broke during the show that OL Derek Dennis signed with the Edmonton Football Team.
