THURSDAY RUNDOWN: LOADS O’ HOCKEY TALK AND EDMONTON FOOTBALL!

We had lots of laughs on Thursday’s Episode #373 of The RP Show – Canada’s Daytime Sports Talk Show! Here’s the rundown:

  • Rod and Dupes got it going with The Warmup for Four Seasons Sports Palace covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) The NHL/NHLPA dispute over renegotiation of the CBA (How much do you care?), 2) The Pats John Paddock & Connor Bedard speak to the media on Thursday, 3) Wednesday Night Football saw the Steelers beat the Ravens 19-14 (RP wonders what’s with all these 4th-and-short redzone gambles?, 4) NBA training camps open with big deals for Westbrook, Lebron and A.D., 5) The pandemic forces the cancellation of provincial curling championships in Estevan, and 6) The Edmonton Football Club new team name possibilities is down to 10.
  • Former Predators/Canadiens/Blazers/Pats defenceman Victor Bartley joined the show from Nashville, TN. He discussed his years with the Preds and why his family decided to settle in Music City (Barts has a thriving real estate business there). The Maple Ridge, BC product said he didn’t realize at the time how lucky he was to play in Kamloops and Regina, the two crown jewel franchises of the WHL. He also discussed playing on the Pats with up-and-coming stars Jordan Eberle, Colten Teubert and Jordan Weal.
  • The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Which is Canada’s best-ever World Junior team – 1991, 2005, 2009 or other? At press time, the Crosby, Phaneuf, Perry, Getzlaf unit from 2005 in Grand Forks was leading.
  • Hour 2 was simulcast on Game+ TV and Facebook Live and after re-upping the Quick Six, we were joined in a 3-way video call by Sportsnet CHL broadcasters Sam Cosentino and Rob Faulds. The pair explained why they love the CHL so much, and revealed their top Memorial Cups of all-time. Both chose the 2007 MC in Vancouver, but gave an honourable mention to the 100th Memorial Cup in Regina. They answered tons of questions from viewers and Sam is hopeful there will be a World Juniors in Edmonton but admitted it’ll be tough to get 400+ out-of-country players into Canada. Faulds discussed some curling, and hopes to be in the Calgary bubble for championship and Grand Slam events.
  • Oddly enough, the hottest topic coming out of the show was the Edmonton team name and viewers chimed in with their top selections. RP said that due to the interest, we’ve constructed a bracket for viewers to vote on on our Instagram feed at @therodpedersenshow.
