THURSDAY RUNDOWN: SUPER WEEK CONTINUES, AND DUB NEWS!
A fun week with lots of breaking news continued with Episode #414 of The RP Show – Canada’s Daytime Sports Talk Show on Thursday! Here’s the rundown:
- Rod and Dupes kicked it off with The Warmup for the Four Seasons Sports Palace covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) Sportsnet’s Jeff Marek Tweeted that the WHL is eyeing a Regina bubble. WHL staffers are quick to point out nothing’s been finalized, 2) Covid Chaos in the NHL with four teams on pause, 3) The RP Show broke the story that Charleston Hughes has signed with the Argos, 4) The NLL cancels its season, 5) 8 games on tap in the NHL Thursday including Ottawa/Montreal, Vancouver/Toronto and Calgary/Winnipeg, and 6) Paul Maurice calls out the Winnipeg media for their heat on Jets captain Blake Wheeler (Rod quoted a Winnipeg source as saying Maurice’s comments were aimed at ALL of Winnipeg rather than just one reporter).
- Winnipeg Blue Bombers Assistant GM Ted Goveia joined the show from Southern Ontario for a wide-ranging chat. He scouted the Reese’s Senior Bowl in Mobile, AL and reported on the game, and how it differed from past years. He discussed his role with the Bombers, explained the difficulties in scouting Canadian prospects ahead of the Virtual Combine & Draft, and reflected on his Grey Cup championships with the 2012 Argonauts and 2019 Blue Bombers.
- The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Which team will have more rushing yards in Super Bowl LV – Chiefs or Buccaneers? At press time 58% of respondents voted for Kansas City.
- In Hour 2 we re-upped the Quick Six and then were joined by 15-year NFL veteran and Pro Bowl QB Gus Frerotte of the Huddle Up With Gus Podcast. Frerotte previewed the Super Bowl and picked Kansas City to win. He detailed the defensive fronts of both teams and went into the match-ups of the coordinators. Rod asked if the New England Patriots would’ve won any Super Bowls without Tom Brady, and who’s more responsible for The Patriot Way: Brady or Belichick? Gus quipped, “Well Tom’s in the Super Bowl and Bill isn’t!” He went on to explain that the pair worked tremendously together for 20 years and had great success but good things don’t last forever.
- NFL/CFL alum and Super Bowl champ Brandon London joined the show from Denver, CO for more Super Bowl preview talk. The former Alouette and current host of Giants TV said he’s really missing being at Super Bowl week and all the parties. He predicts the Super Bowl will go to overtime with the Buccaneers winning by 6. At age 36, London marvelled at Tom Brady’s longevity and said he’s a master at taking care of his body.
