THURSDAY RUNDOWN: TIME FOR TIM & SID!

TIM MICALLEF

It was a wild Episode #339 of The RP Show – Canada’s Daytime Sports Talk Show – on Thursday! Here’s the rundown:

  • Rod and Dupes kicked it off with The Warmup covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) The Atlanta Falcons close their practice facility due to a positive Covid test, 2) The WHL announces a January 8 Return To Play, 3) Golden Knights owner Bill Foley’s “slip” about a Canadian division in the NHL, 4) There will be no Thursday Night Football game, 5) MLB League Championship Series updates, and 6) CFL SIM Canada’s Game of the Week is Ottawa at Calgary Friday at 7 pm MT on the RP Show Facebook channel featuring Nick Arbuckle’s return to McMahon!
  • Famed sportscaster Tim Micallef of Sportsnet’s Tim & Sid Show joined us from his Toronto home. He and RP worked together at The Score years ago and renewed acquaintances. Micallef was the Voice of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats years ago and reflected how moved he was by Saskatchewan’s love for Ticats coach Ron Lancaster when the Tabbies visited Taylor Field in the 2000s. He expressed his love for the CFL and what it means to Canada. Micallef then got into the Foley “slip”, saying the Canadian division is a concept NHL insiders have known for awhile. He feels it would be a boon for Sportsnet NHL ratings. Rod asked what Tim’s favourite topic is and he admitted that his pet peeve is why Canadian sports fans feel we’re second-rate in every sport except the NHL? Micallef also went deep on broadcasting the 2006 Vanier Cup in Saskatoon in minus-35 degree conditions, and how he’ll never forget it. He also congratulated the RP Show staff on the success of the show.
  • The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Do you favour a Canadian NHL Division? At press time, 70% of respondents said yes.
  • Hour 2 was broadcast on Facebook Live only and we were joined by Portland Winterhawks forward and Tampa Bay Lighning 5th round pick Jaydon Dureau. The Regina product reflected on Draft Day, how his draft year went with Portland, and why The Rose City is regarded by many as the best junior city in the CHL. The speedy forward also credited Notre Dame for his hockey development and what the addition of the NHL’s Seattle Kraken will mean to Pacific Northwest hockey fans.
  • 3-time Grey Cup champion Paul Woldu joined the bunker to promote the Regina Food Bank’s drive to “Donate Your Jersey Number”. Football greats are encouraging fans to donate the cash amount matching their jersey number, or your favourite player’s number. Paul then got into a football discussion, the unfortunate cancelling of the 2020 CFL season and what the league needs to survive the pandemic.
  • News broke near the end of the show that U-Sports is cancelling sports until March and the chaos the players are feeling currently.
  • The guys also got a tip on how the WHL may Return To Play and it includes a variety of scenarios with fans being allowed in some jurisdictions but not others, bubble cities and no clear road map for the playoffs.
  • You can vote now on our Twitter poll for the Rockstar of the Day for RoxDar Supply Chain Solutions. At press time, Tim Micallef was leading. Wednesday’s vote was won by Matt Dunstone.
