THURSDAY SHOW RECAP
Thursday was Episode #72 of The Rod Pedersen Show. Here are the highlights!:
- Rod was joined in the bunker for The Warmup by Riders/Bombers/Renegades alum Mike Abou-Mechrek and The Silver Fox Kelly Remple. They discussed the day’s hottest sports topics including the latest CFL news, contract holdouts in the NHL at the opening of training camps, and greed in pro sports.
- The topic of “greed” was a theme throughout the whole show. The guys wondered when is “enough is enough”?, and when will fans put their foot down? The discussion drifted over to CFL teams not allowing their coordinators to interview for head coaching positions, and examined all perspectives.
- That brought about the daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question: Is player greed turning you off of the NHL? The slight majority of respondents said “yes”.
- Abou predicted an implosion by the Edmonton Eskimos three weeks ago, just before their current 3-game losing streak. He said he’s never been a believer in Eskimo QB Trevor Harris, and that he’s been able to find success and pad his stats in the weaker East Division before signing in Edmonton as a free agent.
- Abou also broke down the play of the Roughriders offensive line and said despite the suspect results in the back-to-back set with Winnipeg, he feels the group is playing fairly well. He also noted the absences of Philip Blake and Brendon Labatte.
- The Silver Fox offered his thoughts on the Jon Ryan/Derek Taylor saga, saying the Rider punter has had a good season. The panel agreed that hometown broadcasters aren’t allowed to be objective when it comes to covering their teams anymore.
- The Voice of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats Marshall Ferguson joined the show to preview Saturday’s Ticats-Stampeders showdown in Calgary. Marshall explained how the Ticats have been able to achieve a 9-2 record despite the loss of QB Jeremiah Masoli, and who’s responsible for the team’s success.
- The 2019-2020 SJHL season opens on Friday and league President Bill Chow joined the bunker to preview the upcoming campaign. He also discussed the team’s latest marketing initiatives, and the league’s foray into the Pay-To-Play model.
- In honour of show #72, the guys recognized sports figures who’ve worn number-72 and the group included Cleveland Vann, Colin Scrivener, the ’72 Dolphins, Dan Dierdorf, Carlton Fisk and William “The Refrigerator” Perry.
