THURSDAY SHOW RECAP: COVERING IT ALL!

RICHSUTTER

Thursday shaped up to be a big sports day and we covered it all on Episode #229 of The Rod Pedersen Show! Here are the highlights:

  • Rod and Dupes got it going with The Rollout for Flooring Superstore covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) It’s NFL schedule release day!, 2) CFL Commissioner Randy Ambrosie to testify before the House of Commons Thursday evening, 3) MLB to tentatively re-open spring training in mid-June, 4) Should the CFL look to the NFL for funding?, 5) SJHL Playoff Simulation – Melfort leads Flin Flon 3-2 and Yorkton leads the Battlefords 3-2 in the semifinals, and 6) Korean Baseball League results!
  • The guys recapped Thursday morning’s action in the KBO and Rod mentioned the Eagles’ Kwang Min Song leads the league in batting average at a whopping .714, Dong Min Han of Rod’s Wyverns leads the league in homeruns with two, and the Giants’ Dixon Machado leads the league in RBI with four. It was pointed out that Director Jordan’s Wiz are winless at 0-2.
  • RP Show contributor Derek “Duke’ Meyers joined the show via video chat to discuss all these topics. He feels the WCBL’s Weyburn franchise should change their name from the Beavers to the “Wyverns”. Regarding CFL Federal aid, the Duke figures that if the CFL is that destitute, owners should examine their business models. Rod countered that if these business moguls can’t figure a way to squeeze out a buck, who could?
  • The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: It’s NFL schedule day! How excited are you? – Very excited, Meh, or Not At All! CFL rules. Winning by a nose was Not At All.
  • The guys discussed the latest Angus Reid poll asking Canadians which season cancellation they fear more: CFL or NFL? The provinces who voted for the CFL are BC, AB, SK and MB while the provinces who favoured the NFL are ON, QC and the Maritimes. Rod said that tells us three things: 1) What’s wrong with Eastern Canada, 2) These poll results aren’t good news for the NFL in Canada, and 3) The NFL isn’t gaining as much ground in Western Canada as people thought.
  • New Estevan Bruins Head Coach & GM Jason Tatarnic joined the show from his home in Chilliwack, BC and discussed Wednesday’s hiring. He explained his hockey resume (he played for Barry McKenzie’s Notre Dame Junior A Hounds from 1993-95) and coached Junior A in the Maritimes and BC. He feels the Bruins roster is in excellent shape and explained how hosting the 2020 Centennial Cup will change how they’d normally put a team together.
  • In Hour 2 Rod had a back-and-forth with viewers over the merit of the Skip The Dishes app during the pandemic. Some viewers favoured a boycott but Rod explained that hurts locally-owned restaurants who use Skip The Dishes because it’s more cost-effective than a full-time delivery driver.
  • 13-year NHL veteran Rich Sutter of Hockey’s First Family joined the show for a very entertaining chat presented by Original 16. Richie talked about the uncertainty around the 2020 NHL Draft (teams currently have no idea when it will be) and discussed the Classic Games airing on Sportsnet featuring his Philadelphia Flyers and the Edmonton Oilers in the 1980s. He figured Flyers goalie Ron Hextall would get a 5-game suspension these days for his baseball-swing slash on the Oilers Kent Nilsson in the 1987 Stanley Cup Final. He also said the 1985 and 1987 Flyers are the two best NHL teams to NOT win a Stanley Cup.
  • TSN Edmonton’s Dustin Nielson joined the show to talk about how they’re filling 4-hours of airtime daily without sports. He explained their popular Strip Mall Draft and the XBOX simulation of the Stanley Cup Playoffs featuring the Oilers. Dusty’s calling the games and said the Dallas Stars are currently up 1-0 on the Oilers in the Western Conference Final.
  • That spun into Rod’s wild story of attending Games 3 & 4 of the Oilers/Stars 1997 playoff series and the behind-the-scenes events he witnessed since his Dad was on the Stars staff at the time. He said incidents like that served to give him great insight into how coaches and players think in critical moments. Producer Clark chimed in with his story of being yelled at by Darian Durant for stepping on the Rider logo in the team locker room when Clark was interning with the club in Football Operations.
  • You can vote now on our Twitter poll for the R0ckstar of the Day for RoxDar Supply Chain Solutions. At press time, Sutter was winning by a nose. Wednesday winner was Kim Coates. All winners will receive a Rockstar hat from RoxDar.
