THURSDAY SHOW RECAP: FLAMES DAY!

We covered a lot of ground – including lots of Calgary Flames talk – on Thursday’s Episode #219 of The Rod Pedersen Show! Here are the highlights:

  • Rod and Dupes opened things up with The Rollout for Flooring Superstore covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) CFL/CFLPA talks during the pandemic, 2) Thursday night’s Round 1 of the NFL Draft, 3) Edmonton as a hub city for the NHL, 4) The controversial SJHL playoffs simulation, 5) Should the CFL glitz up the Draft?, and 6) Expectations of Connor Bedard for the Regina Pats.
  • On these topics Rod said – if all things are equal – he’s on the side of the players and coaches but things AREN’T currently equal in the CFL and feels the players should stand down until everything is sorted out. They may have less leverage now than they’ve ever had. On the SJHL simulation, Rod said it was pretty clear that the Canalta Cup was to be handed out after the SJHL computer simulation but obviously that notion has changed due to objections from the league’s hockey operations people. As for Bedard, Rod thinks it’s not unreasonable to expect Bedard to score at a point-per-game clip in his rookie 15-year old season. Dupes isn’t so sure.
  • 1,070 game NHL veteran Robyn Regehr joined the show from his cabin in Northern Saskatchewan and said he got his family out of Calgary just before the pandemic hit full force. He talked about winning the Stanley Cup with L.A. in 2014, losing the Stanley Cup in 2004 with the Flames, and many more NHL stories. He and Rod laughed about holding their own unofficial “Riderville” at the 2009 Grey Cup in Calgary at the Back Alley nightclub.
  • Flames broadcaster Peter Loubardias joined the show from his off-season home in Mississauga, ON. He said no one knows if the NHL season will resume, so he’s choosing to be optimistic at the moment. “Lou” said he’s spent the downtime working on various projects and reading several self-improvement books.
  • The hockey talk continued into Hour 2 as the boys were joined by NHL veteran Curtis Glencross, a product of Kindersley, SK. Glencross is at home with his family on their section of land northwest of Calgary, and said not much has changed in their quiet life. They recently added on to their 5-member family, and he’s enjoying having the kids at home full-time. Glencross took questions from viewers, and said the Flames should be ready for a Cup run if the season resumes.
  • Battlefords North Stars Head Coach & GM Brayden Klimosko joined the show from his home office. He admitted to being quite unhappy that the playoffs were halted with his team up 3-1 on Nipawin in Round 1 but cooled down once he saw what the rest of the world is going through. The Humboldt product said his club was primed for a defence of their SJHL title and explained that his club will be undergoing a rebuilding process starting next year. Brayden is up for the NHL’s Haugen/Cross Memorial Award this summer.
  • The panel debated the intrigue that awaits in Round 1 of the NFL Draft, and said plans are underway for the 2nd Annual RP Show VIP Sports Trip which will be headed to Miami. Several patrons have already put their deposits down through Uniglobe LGI Travel.
