THURSDAY SHOW RECAP: HOCKEY STORIES!

REEDLOW

We had a lot of hockey tough guys on Thursday’s Episode #238 of The Rod Pedersen Show! Here are the highlights:

  • Rod and Dupes covered these Quick Six show topics in The Rollout for Flooring Superstore: 1) Reaction to Randy Ambrosie’s Virtual Town Hall and statement on the CFL, 2) How does this affect the teams?, 3) USA Today’s NFL win predictions for 2020: Dallas (10), Cleveland (7), Tampa Bay (10), New England (8), 4) Tiger Woods/Peyton Manning are heavily favoured by oddsmakers for their golf match against Phil Mickelson/Tom Brady on Sunday, 5) Pats fans fear no WHL season because they want to see phenom Connor Bedard (and the importance of players), and 6) Clarification on the CFL statement.
  • Regarding Randy Ambrosie’s statement, Rod said he’s seen many media and fans saying the Commissioner declared the CFL season will kickoff in September. Rod advised that that’s simply “best-case scenario”.
  • The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Do you think the CFL will play games in 2020? Results were about 50/50. Rod and Dupes said they voted “no”, but it pained them to do so. There appears to be too many obstacles in the way.
  • TSN 1260 Edmonton’s Jason Strudwick joined the show from the City of Champions. He expressed his support for the CFL receiving Federal aid, support for American players receiving Canadian government assistance, and said he’s disappointed the 2020 Grey Cup Festival was moved to 2022 because he planned to be in attendance. The long-time NHLer also discussed the NHL’s proposed 24-team playoff format and the Oilers chances.
  • 1989 Stanley Cup champion and former M.J. Warriors coach Tim Hunter joined the show from his lake house and immediately buried the hatchet with Dupes regarding their storied feud. “Sometimes you’ve gotta bust a guy’s balls!” Hunter laughed. The Calgary product talked about his love of aviation, his close association with the Snowbirds, and said this season’s Battle of Alberta didn’t compare to the battles in the 1980s. Regarding coaching again, Hunter said he’s already turned down two opportunities in Europe and is considering retirement.
  • The guys opened Hour 2 by answering viewer questions and talking about the CFL situation. Rod mentioned that there’s a chance the CFL could fold without financial assistance, but doesn’t think the CFL will “die”. Viewers agreed a reset may be necessary to put the CFL on more solid footing.
  • Famed NHL and WHL enforcer Reed Low joined the show from St. Louis. The Moose Jaw product talked about his junior days in Minot, Regina and with his hometown Warriors, fighting his heroes in the NHL, and the Blues’ chances of repeating as Stanley Cup champions. Regarding the beating he administered to Jason Strudwick back in the day in the NHL, Reed laughed, “He picked the wrong day to fight me”. He’d been challenged by his coach Joel Quenneville earlier in the day.
  • Columbus Blue Jackets scout and 13-year NHLer Rich Sutter joined the show from Edmonton to talk about the challenges around no date being set for the NHL Draft. He talked about the Blue Jackets’ Stanley Cup chances, why Columbus would be an ideal Quarantine City, and professed his love for Great Western’s Original 16 beer!
  • Rod teed up Football Friday saying Edmonton QB Trevor Harris challenged him to select his ideal QB using bits and pieces from current CFL QBs, and the results would be revealed on Friday’s show. Rod challenged viewers to come up with theirs.
