The Rod Pedersen Show stepped out of the football realm on Thursday and offered up some true Canadiana for Episode #140! Here are some highlights:

  • Curling great Rachel Homan joined the show from her home in St. Paul, AB to talk about her 2019-20 curling season and a variety of other topics. She discussed her Canada Cup win in Leduc, AB a few weeks back, and what a feather in her cap it was to gain the first berth in the Olympic trials. She also talked about Curling Canada’s recent announcement that female champions will enjoy equal pay to their male counterparts in future championships. However she countered that she wished the announcement had come years earlier, as she’s already won three crowns!
  • Rachel also discussed her steely reputation as a fiery competitor but said it’s really no different than pro hockey or football players. If cameras caught them under their helmets, they’d offer the same intense facial expressions that she’s known for on TSN telecasts. She also laughed at the recent speaking event in Paradise Hill, SK where she witnessed a terse exchange between Rod and Darryl Sutter. “I was with you!” Homan chuckled. “It was 2 against 200 and I didn’t say anything because I didn’t want to make Saskatchewan made at me!”
  • Meanwhile NHL record-holder Mike Sillinger and his son Cole Sillinger joined the bunker during the WHL Christmas break. Cole is tearing up the Dub as a 16-year old with the Top 10-ranked Medicine Hat Tigers and explained why he chose the WHL over NCAA. It was a wide-ranging hockey chat and Mike admitted that his son is far ahead in his hockey career than where Mike was as a 16-year old with his hometown Regina Pats.
  • The Calgary Sun’s Danny Austin joined the show to talk about the shake-up in the Calgary Stampeders coaching staff. Pete Costanza and Ryan Dinwiddie have left the Stamps and Danny feels there are more moves to come, particularly on defense. He said 2019 added up to a “rebuilding year” for the Stampeders, or at least as much as that franchise is used to. He feels back-up QB Nick Arbuckle is as good as gone in free agency, and the team could lose more top-flight stars to the NFL. Austin also discussed the Calgary Flames season, and gave up updates on Calgary’s hockey and football facilities.
  • The guys talked a bit about the upcoming World Junior Hockey Championships in the Czeck Republic and that led to the daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question of: How will Team Canada finish at the World Juniors? A gold medal was picked by the majority, at 38%.
