TUESDAY COMMENTARY – HOLY SMOKES!

(Listen daily for the RP Commentary on Cat Country 98, Rock 98.5 FM & LTD Radio)

It’s Tuesday and that means it’s time for another edition of the Good, the Great & the Ugly!

First, the good: The dominoes are falling in the NFL and that can be seen as nothing but a good thing.

On Monday two of the top four rushers in the NFL over the past seven seasons landed with new teams: Ezekiel Elliott with the New England Patriots and Dalvin Cook with the NY Jets.

I saw fans and pundits in both markets saying these moves weren’t necessary but I’m always reminded of the words of former Rider Assistant GM Bob Vespaziani in these situations:

“Better is better.”

Next, the great: Not sure if you follow the media goings-on outside your market but huge news out of Edmonton on Monday that sportscasters dumped by TSN Radio earlier this summer have started their own all sports radio station – Sports 1440 – which will go to air early next month.

Jason Gregor and Lowetide will be joined by morning host Kevin Karius – the Melville Millionaire – who’s making the jump from decades in TV to the sportsradio gig. Kevin and I went to college together in Calgary and were roommates in PA.

I talked to them all yesterday and it’s nice to see somebody fighting back in this industry for a change. Some well-heeled Edmonton businessmen weren’t going to stand for TSN ash-canning their sports coverage in the Alberta capital, so they pooled their money and came up with this.

How ’bout that!?

And lastly, the ugly: Why does it always have to be the Edmonton Elks?

On Monday evening word leaked that the current laughing stock of pro sports is parting ways with their President, Victor Cui.

Let me caution you that you never truly know what’s going on within an organization. N-E-V-E-R. But if it’s worse in Edmonton than how it looks from the outside, holy smokes!

Let me just say, I didn’t see Victor Cui throw an interception this year nor miss a tackle.

They’re free to run their franchise however they want.

Even if it is into the ground.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary

(The Rod Pedersen Show airs daily at 12 pm ET on Game+TV, WQEE Radio, Podcast & YouTube Live)

He is most certainly not the issue nor the problem. The problem was they hired everything in reverse order. I’ll say it again. Go read Snakes in Suits: When Psychopaths Go To Work by Paul Babiak. I’ve never witnessed one singular organization get screwed with no grease by the same man T.W.I.C.E….. Let me be clear. When Assistant Coaches are Assistant Coaches for decades there is a reason. Eventually someone is either to cheap (Fred Wagman 1990s Riders hiring Jim Daley when John Hufnagel was looking to come to the CFL from Arena Football) to Greg Marshall to Reuben Berry… Read more »

Couldn’t have said it better myself! What goes around comes around. When Esks were on top of the Universe, trash talked the rest of the league, but especially Saskatchewan!! I’ve lived in Edmonton for 20 years, and we had to just put up with that crap! Which of course made1989 even sweeter. Andi still have my season tickets at Mosaic…….
