Tuesday Commentary: If You Can’t Beat Em …

(Listen daily for the RP Commentary on the All New Hits 98 & LTD Radio)
It’s Tuesday and time for the Good, the Great & the Ugly …
First the good: Can’t tell you how good it felt to be back in our local Dub arenas to watch the intrasquad games of both the Moose Jaw Warriors and Regina Pats this weekend! To the Pats’ credit, they let fans know well ahead of time that #1 draft pick Maddox Schultz wasn’t going to be playing Monday evening due to a mild injury (he’ll play Wednesday in Swift Current).
I texted Pats GM Dale Derkatch for confirmation of Maddox’s status and he said to come to the game anyways. I’m sure glad I did!
Next the great: Two of the three Labour Day Classic games in the CFL on the weekend were absolute bangers. The Riders’ home win over Winnipeg came down to the last minute, although the game didn’t really feel that close. Then the Toronto-Hamilton game – which the Argos won 35-33 – was probably the most unlikely, incredible ending I’ve ever seen to a CFL game. Kudos to the Argos for not giving up, and kudos to the timekeepers at Hamilton Stadium for being so alert at a critical time! What a classic.
Calgary stomped Edmonton 28-7 in the final game and although it wasn’t anywhere near a classic, it established the Stampeders as the CFL’s #1 team at the turn.
And finally the ugly: Glad I didn’t stay home to watch Bill Belichick’s debut with North Carolina. The Tar Heels were overwhelmed 48-14 by TCU in Chapel Hill and by the end, Belichick looked very lonely and bewildered on the sideline. Former CFL sideline boss Chris Jones is on Belichick’s staff at UNC, but he didn’t get any TV time.
It was a fizzling end to a pretty sensational Week 1 of College Football and it’s already got me hotly anticipating this week’s AP rankings.
What do they say? If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em …
