TUESDAY RUNDOWN: CFL TALK AND SHARKS’ LOGAN COUTURE!
We tackled the day’s hottest sports topics on Episode #299 of The Rod Pedersen Show, Canada’s daytime sports talk show! Here are the highlights:
- Rod, Dupes and Derek “Duke” Meyers opened with The Rollout for Flooring Superstores covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) Fallout from the CFL 2020 season cancellation, 2) Will all CFL player contracts become null and void?, 3) The Blues have woken up in the Vancouver series, 4) Canadiens/Flyers is turning into a “goalie series”, 5) The Blue Jays won 7-2 at Baltimore and are 3.5 games off the division lead, and 6) The Raptors take game 1 against Brooklyn 134-110.
- The majority of Hour 1 on Game+ TV Network was devoted to the CFL news and the guys agreed the season cancellation is major news in the football world. While the rest of Canada has woken up and fears the CFL may fold, the panel said they’ve been examining the situation for weeks and that WON’T happen. They examined the foibles of CFL ownership over the past few decades and what changes need to be made. RP said that while he’s a staunch supporter of Randy Ambrosie, he may be blind to the Commissioner’s perceived shortcomings. They dissected Ambrosie’s tenure and what’s next for the CFL.
- San Jose Sharks forward Logan Couture joined the show from Ontario and said he’s definitely missing being in the Stanley Cup Playoffs since the Sharks have made the playoffs in nine of his 11 seasons. The Guelph product said many of his friends who ARE in the playoffs are really enjoying them and having a lot of fun. Couture said it really stings to miss the playoffs since they planned to be a contender, however he feels this season was a blip. He’s stayed in San Jose over his career because he believes in the direction of GM Doug Wilson. Logan also answered many questions from viewers.
- The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Which is Canada’s Game of the Week in Week 11 of CFL SIM – WPG at CGY, OTT at MTL, HAM at TOR or EDM at SASK? At press time, Edmonton/Saskatchewan had over 70% of the vote.
- Hour 2 was broadcast on Facebook Live only and we went into a deep dive on the CFL situation with TSN’s Dave Naylor. Dave said “uncertainty” is the most popular term in the CFL at the moment, and surmised it really doesn’t matter which teams wanted to play and which ones didn’t. Regarding CFL player contracts becoming null and void, Naylor thinks that doesn’t serve a purpose and players likely wouldn’t want it to happen (for instance Cody Fajardo certainly would not want his contract voided). Naylor also calmed fears over the CFL folding and ended the interview advising RP to “keep talking CFL”.
- Fan 590 Toronto’s Nick Alberga joined the show to discuss the MLS resuming with an all-Canadian division including a game tonight at BMO Field. The Leafs radio host discussed the Stanley Cup Playoffs and the contenders and pretenders.
- CFL great Nik Lewis was a surprise guest in the bunker and talked about the CFL season cancellation and the league’s future. He said he knows of deep-pocketed types who are interested in buying the CFL. Lewis said he doesn’t fear for the CFL’s future but admitted it’ll look a lot different when it comes back.
- CFL fans in Ontario and Quebec wrote into the show saying it’s a shame they need to get their CFL coverage from a Saskatchewan-based program. RP said we take no offense and that once you get past a perceived “stigma”, Saskatchewan truly is the epicentre of the CFL.
- You can vote now on our Twitter poll for the Rockstar of the Day for RoxDar Supply Chain Solutions. At press time, Nik Lewis was leading. Monday’s vote was won by Brian Propp.
