TUESDAY RUNDOWN: CFL/XFL FAKE NEWS AND HOCKEY LEGENDS
Said our Technical Producer Ryan Borowko, “Tuesday’s show was excellent in every day!” We had big fun on Episode #443 of The RP Show – Canada’s Daytime Sports Talkshow. Read on for the rundown:
- RP and Moose Dupont opened with The Warmup for Four Seasons Sports Palace covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) The Argonauts sign Canadian LB Henoc Muamba, 2) Monday NHL leftovers (Rod found himself pulling for the Flames!), 3) NFL free agency opens with big signings, 4) Bedard vs Brayden in the Dub Tuesday night!, 5) Rod gets more heat from the Winnipeg Free Press on his CFL fundraising stance, and 6) The Blue Jays beat Detroit 4-0.
- Actually before all of that Rod roasted the report from the United Football Players Association that the CFL is looking at cancelling the 2021 AND 2022 seasons. RP said the association has no affiliation with the CFL and CFLPA and that this is irresponsible Fake News. The CFL later released a statement saying there is no basis to the report.
- NHL legend Ron Duguay joined the show from Florida for a wild chat. He was known as a 1970s and 1980s NHL heartthrob and the Rangers, Red Wings, Penguins & Kings great told some great stories of being “Bon Jovi before there was Bon Jovi”. Rod asked what was better – playing for the Rangers or Kings? Duguay quipped, “Oh, New York! In LA it was all about Wayne but in New York it was all about me!” Ron covers the Rangers for the New York Post and discussed this year’s team, trade possibilities and the rookie season of #1 pick Alexis Lafreniere. He then turned the tables and asked Rod a bunch of questions saying, “I see you’re a hockey guy … So is Darryl Sutter bringing back old school coaches? And why are there no big, tough Canadian NHL players anymore?” They just scratched the surface and Duguay said he wants to come back on soon.
- Next up was Regina Pats icon and former Maple Leafs & Capitals scout Dale Derkatch. He previewed tonight’s Pats/Warriors clash on AccessNow TV, gave a scouting report on Connor Bedard, and discussed the nightly furor over Scotia North NHL Division results. He also discussed how hockey’s changed and what attributes scouts are looking for these days.
- In Hour 2 we re-upped the Quick Six and chatted further with Dale “The Rat” Derkatch in Segment 1.
- In Segment 2 we were joined by longtime NHL head coach and current NHL Network Bruce Boudreau from his home in Hershey, PA. “Gabby” answered a machine gun of questions from viewers including his career as a player with the Leafs, what it takes to be a good NHL coach (“Have good players,” he joked), and his time in the WHA and AHL as player and coach. He said the most skilled player he ever coached was Alexander Ovechkin.
- The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Has Bill Belichick purchased a contender in free agency? At press time, 80% of respondents said no.
- Ron Duguay was named the Rockstar of the Day for RoxDar Supply Chain Solutions by acclimation.
