TUESDAY RUNDOWN: GRAPES LIGHTS IT UP!

Episode #313 of The RP Show, Canada’s Daytime Sports Talk Show was our biggest yet! Here are the highlights:

  • Rod and Dupes opened with The Warmup covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) Labour Day leftovers (It’s clear Canadians love and miss the CFL), 2) The Raptors are on the ropes, 3) Tampa Bay routs the Islanders 8-2 in Game 1 of the NHL Eastern Final, 4) Who starts in goal for Vegas in Game 2 of the Western Final against Dallas? (RP said it’s anyone’s guess), 5) NFL cutdown weekend (Chris Streveler makes the Cardinals, Richie Leone (Arizona) and Derrick Moncrief (LA Rams) sign practice roster deals), and 6) What in the world went on in tennis over the weekend??
  • The moment everyone was waiting for came in Segment 2 as we were joined by Don Cherry from his home in Southern Ontario. Grapes talked about the Stanley Cup Playoffs and said the hockey’s been tremendous because there’s no travel involved. He was disappointed the Boston Bruins were knocked out, saying they got the shaft by not getting the #1 seed and it wasn’t goalie Jaraslav Halak’s fault they lost. Cherry also said Vegas really missed Ryan Reaves in Game 1 against the Stars and discussed the delicate nature of handling goalies in the playoffs. The hockey icon also called the Toronto Maple Leafs “soft”, said he takes pride in helping build the “Suit & Tie” culture in hockey, and wished Kevin Bieksa well in trying to fill his role in the first intermissions on Hockey Night In Canada. Cherry also got choked up when RP said how much the hockey guys miss him on TV and admitted he’s worried he’ll be forgotten! He offered to come on the show again throughout the playoffs.
  • The Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Which is Canada’s Game of the Week in Week 14 of the CFL SIM schedule – Sask at Winnipeg, Calgary at Edmonton, Montreal at Ottawa or Toronto at BC? At press time the Banjo Bowl was way out in front.
  • Hour 2 was broadcast on Facebook Live only and we were joined in the bunker by Hall of Fame Rider President Jim Hopson. He said he didn’t miss football as much he thought he would this summer, however he’s really missing it now. He feels the CFL badly needs to find a way to stage games in 2021 or the league’s going to be in far more trouble than it’s in now. Hopson also suggested the CFL 2.0 global initiative be paused while the league gets its house in order. Viewers asked Jim if he’d ever return to the CFL and he answered that while anything’s possible, nothing’s in the works.
  • The Sports Doctor Dave Petrishen joined the show from Winnipeg and explained what an opportunity is being missed for the Blue Bombers with no season in 2020. “You only get to celebrate your 21st birthday once,” the Doc paralleled. He also talked about Chris Streveler making the Cardinals and that Winnipeg fans barely had time to celebrate the South Dakota product. As a Minnesota Vikings season ticket holder, Doc likes their Week 1 match-up against Green Bay.
  • You can vote now on our Twitter poll for the Rockstar of the Day for RoxDar Supply Chain Solutions. At press time, Don Cherry was way out in front. Friday’s vote was won by James Duthie.
