TUESDAY RUNDOWN: LOADS OF CURLING & LOU MARSH AWARD TALK!
We had some hot debates on Episode #376 of The RP Show – Canada’s Daytime Sports Talk Show – on Tuesday! Here’s the rundown:
- RP and Dupes opened with The Warmup for Four Seasons Sports Palace covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) TSN’s Darren Dreger reports a January 13 NHL start date and that money issues have been put aside, 2) The Lou Marsh Award winner (Canada’s athlete of the year) will be named Tuesday afternoon. Who should win? 3) Rod’s Top 5 sports teams Tweet went viral with the Blue Jays responding, 4) CFL News: GM signings in Edmonton and BC, 5) Tuesday Night Football has Dallas at Baltimore and 6) James Harden has yet to report to Houston Rockets camp and coach Stephen Silas has no idea where he is.
- The Lou Marsh Award was the main theme of the day and the daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question asked who it should be?: Chase Claypool, Alphonso Davies, Laurent Duvernay-Tardif or Jamal Murray? RP voted for Chase Claypool and said this isn’t a Humanitarian of the Year trophy, while Dupes voted for LDT.
- **BREAKING NEWS** at 12:40 pm CT it was announced that Duvernay-Tardif and Davies tied for the award.
- Global TV’s Taylor Shire joined the show to cover a ton of topics, including his new side job with the Link Management sports agency where he’ll represent Sask hockey players. Taylor talked about covering sports on the local scene during 10 months of the pandemic, but expressed optimism for the NHL, CFL, WHL, SJHL and more. “There’s a light at the end of the tunnel,” Shire said.
- CBC Toronto’s Devin Heroux joined the show to break more curling news. Last month he broke that news that Curling Canada will host the national championships in a Calgary Bubble in February/March and on Tuesday he reported there will be a 1-year suspension for any curlers breaking Covid protocols. Rod asked Devin why Curling Canada was able to pull this off while other leagues couldn’t and he responded, “Their will.”
- Hour 2 was simulcast on Game+ TV and Facebook Live and after re-upping the Quick Six, we were joined by Curling Canada Communications Director Allen Cameron from Kamloops. He went deep into the backstory on how their association plans to pull the Calgary Bubble off, and why they instituted such a harsh penalty for rule-breakers. He also revealed they expect all 10 provinces, 3 Territories plus Northern Ontario to be represented at both championships. Allen also told stories of his time covering the Calgary Stampeders for the Calgary Herald from 2008-2012, and how much he misses the loop.
- You can vote now on our poll for the Rockstar of the Day for Rockstar Supply Chain Solutions. Monday’s winner was TSN’s Craig Button.
