TUESDAY RUNDOWN: NHL DRAFT PREVIEW

BARNIE

It’s a huge day in hockey and we had a solid preview on Episode #333 of The RP Show – Canada’s Daytime Sports Talk Show! Here’s the rundown:

  • Rod and Dupes opened with The Warmup covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) Round 1 of the NHL Draft goes Tuesday evening, 2) Monday Night Football saw Kansas City clobber New England 26-10 and Green Bay dominate Atlanta 30-16 (RP said the predictable outcomes aren’t good for the NFL), 3) The Houston Texans fire GM/Head Coach Bill O’Brien, 4) Two QMJHL teams suspend in-person activities due to positive Covid tests, 5) Connor McDavid has Coronavirus. Do we care? and 6) The Yankees are up 1-0 on Tampa Bay. Is New York the World Series favourite?
  • Famed NHL super pest-turned-analyst Matthew Barnaby joined the show from an arena outside Ottawa where his son was skating with NHL’ers including Erik Karlsson. Barnie said Ottawa is buzzing with all the Senators picks in the first two rounds. He admitted San Jose may be regretting sending a first round pick to the Sens since Karlsson never really panned out for the Sharks. Barnaby discussed the top prospects, answered fan questions and said minor league players are “up in the air” regarding when next season will start.
  • The Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Which is Canada’s Game of the Week in Week 18 of the CFL SIM schedule – Edmonton at Winnipeg, Saskatchewan at Ottawa, Calgary at BC or Toronto at Montreal? At press time the Riders and RedBlacks were leading by a nose.
  • Hour 2 was broadcast Facebook Live only and we were joined by Portland Winterhawks forward and projected first rounder Seth Jarvis from Winnipeg. He admitted that he’s been waiting for today all of his life and said he has 31 NHL hats prepared for when he hears his name called. Jarvis talked about playing for Portland, his linemate Jayden Dureau of Regina, and compared his game to Tampa Bay star Brayden Point.
  • Saskatoon Blades forward Tristen Robins joined the show from Clear Lake, MB to talk about the Draft and his career. He’s not expected to go in Round 1 but hopes to be selected on Wednesday in Rounds 2-7. He expressed his disappointment in having the 2019-20 WHL season halted, reflected on a year ago when his Blades teammate Kirby Dach went #3 overall to Chicago, and the future for the Blades. He also compared his game to Brayden Point.
  • The guys skipped out on as much Coronavirus talk as they could but RP wondered when sports owners will rally on the steps of Parliament Hill to get back playing since their industry has been gutted due to the pandemic. That’s about as far as the panel wanted to go on that topic.
  • The crew applauded Football Canada for holding a summit this month involving the CFL, CJFL and U-Sports. RP said it’s commendable that they’re transparent about the issues they’ll discuss and are working together for the betterment of football in Canada.
  • Regina Mayoralty candidate Sandra Masters joined the show to discuss her campaign, why she wants to be Mayor, and what her vision is for the Queen City.
