TUESDAY RUNDOWN: WORLD JUNIORS PREP & SPORTS TALK

JULIE

We were back at it Tuesday with Episode #381 of The RP Show – Canada’s Daytime Sports Talk Show! Here’s the rundown:

  • Rod and Dupes opened with The Warmup for Four Seasons Sports Palace covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) Monday Night Football featured the 3rd-highest scoring MNF game in history with Baltimore holding off Cleveland 47-42, 2) Monday was a big news day across the CFL with a staff unveiling in Saskatchewan and player signings across the league, 3) NBA preseason action saw the Raptors down the Hornets 112-109 (How much stock do you put in preseason games?), 4) The Cleveland Indians announce they’re changing their team name but not until 2022, 5) Alberta’s top doctor Dr. Deena Hinshaw greenlights the World Juniors Tournament, and 6) The ECHL season has begun and RP encourages viewers to adopt a team. The RP Show’s franchise is the South Carolina Stingrays due to ‘Rays assistant coach Brenden Kotyk of Regina and the fact our show airs across South Carolina on cable on Game+ TV.
  • Andrew “Hustler” Paterson from TSN 1290 Winnipeg joined the show to discuss all these topics plus a few more. There was a back and forth with viewers who are uncomfortable with the tourney going ahead due to the Alberta Covid situation but Hustler feels if they can play safely, and with no threat to the public, then why not? He feels the time has come to return to sports and stop the suffering of players. The “Indians” team name debate came up and Hustler offered his thoughts, including how it relates to his beloved Kansas City Chiefs. The crew spent a good deal of time on the CFL’s current situation and feels that league’s been hit the hardest by the pandemic. “Their whole season was wiped out!” Hustler exclaimed. He feels Canada needs the CFL and predicts a massive celebration in celebrations across the country when the league returns with full stadiums. Paterson joked that our love-in is great now but we’ll be at each other’s throats when the Bombers and Riders resume play.
  • The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Which Eastern Canadian NHL team will finish highest in the standings – Canadiens, Maple Leafs or Senators? At press time, Toronto was leading.
  • Hour 2 was simulcast on Game+ and Facebook Live and we were joined by USA Hockey reporters Julie Robenhymer from EliteProspects.com. We did a deep dive on Team USA for the World Juniors and she answered all viewer questions about their rosters including the chances of Everett Silvertips goalie Dustin Wolf in the American crease. Regarding the popularity of the tournament in the U.S. amid the pandemic, Julie predicted the usual amount of viewers will tune in on NHL Network due to competition from the usual suspects: NFL, NBA and NCAAF Bowl Season.
  • Rod retold a funny story from Monday evening when he tried to purchase TV makeup at Shoppers Drug Mart and the Cosmetologist asked if he planned to dress in drag? Viewers had a ton of fun with that!
