TUESDAY SHOW RECAP: A HOCKEY DAY!

With the NHL firing back up with games on Tuesday, we covered a lot of hockey on Episode #285 of The RP Show! Here are the highlights:

  • Rod and Dupes got it going with The Rollout for Flooring Superstores covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) Want some good news? The good news is the RP Show doesn’t discuss politics (i.e. Trudeau & Morneau being investigated by a watchdog ethics group), 2) Minor league prospects are ringing Marlins GM Don Mattingly’s phone off the hook wanting to play (there’s a message in there for current players), 3) U-Sports reverses its age cap decision, 4) Day 3 at the CEBL Summer Series saw the Hamilton Honey Badgers beat the Guelph Nighthawks 97-71 and the Edmonton Stingers defeat the Ottawa Blackjacks 89-82, 5) Day 4 at the Summer Series features the Saskatchewan Rattlers versus the Fraser Valley Bandits and Guelph up against the Niagara River Lions, and 6) Can the CFL recover from all its current problems?
  • There were several more topics covered in Hour 1 on Game+ TV including Tuesday’s three NHL exhibition games: Flyers/Penguins, Canadiens/Leafs, Oilers/Flames, New England Pro Bowl linebacker Dont’a Hightower opting out of the 2020 NFL season, trying to watch MLB games without fans, and RP is struggling to decide which news and sports news outlets to follow because there’s so much Fake News and opinion mixed in.
  • Columbus Blue Jackets pro scout Rich Sutter joined the show from Lethbridge and answered a ton of viewer questions. He understands the excitement in Calgary but feels the Flames are in tough against Winnipeg in the Play-In Round. Regarding all California teams (Sharks, Kings & Ducks) missing the Play-In Round, he said the drought won’t last long because there are several excellent prospects in the system. Sutter explained that the decision for the NHL to play is the right one and there was never any other realistic alternative. He also scolded the notion that any Play-In Round team would tank in order to try and attain the #1 overall draft selection. Sutter’s playoff favourites are the Canucks and Flyers, since he wasn’t allowed to pick his Blue Jackets.
  • The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Which is Canada’s Game of the Week in Week 8 of the CFL SIM season – Ottawa at Saskatchewan, Winnipeg at Toronto, Hamilton at Edmonton or BC at Montreal? The winner will be broadcast live on the RP Show Facebook Live channel. At press time, the RedBlacks/Roughriders game was the runaway leader.
  • Hour 2 was broadcast on Facebook Live only and since there was an issue connecting with recently-retired LeafsTV reporter Paul Hendrick, RP and Dupes answered questions from the viewers about the CFL. Everyone agreed that the world is moving on without the CFL and they’ll cover any news once it happens. It doesn’t appear positive.
  • When Hendrick joined the show, he went deep on the Leafs/Blue Jackets series and took questions from staunch Leafs fans Dupes and Producer Clark. “Henny” predicts a Leafs series win in 3 or 5 games. He’s not surprised that Adam Brooks wasn’t included on the Leafs playoff roster but feels there’s a great future for the former Regina Pats captain within the organization. Paul also predicted a Pittsburgh sweep of Montreal in the Play-In Round.
  • RP was wearing a Newfoundland Growlers golf shirt – the defending ECHL champs – and the Toronto Maple Leafs were watching the program. They wrote in and informed the masses that the Growlers are a Leafs’ minor league affiliate!
  • Sportsnet’s Brad Fay joined the show from his home in Toronto and he and Rod reflected on first meeting in the Regina Agridome press box in 1995 when Fay was covering the Rockets for the Kelowna Daily Courier. Fay agrees with Charles Barkley’s prediction that the Raptors will win the NBA’s Eastern Conference and he reflected on last year’s magical Raptors championship run saying it was the best time of his broadcasting career. The Vancouver product goes along with pundits’ predictions that the Canucks will have a strong showing in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
  • You can vote now on our Twitter poll for the Rockstar of the Day for RoxDar Supply Chain Solutions. At press time, Rich Sutter was leading. Monday’s vote was won by Gene Makowsky.
  • See you at 10 am MT on Wednesday on Game+ TV Network, Facebook Live and RodPedersen.com/ListenLive. Our guest list includes Hockey Night In Canada’s Ron MacLean!
