TUESDAY SHOW RECAP: BRIAN PROPP, SEAN BURKE AND MORE JOIN!

There was a little bit of everything on Episode #270 of The RP Show! Here are the highlights:

  • Rod and Dupes opened with The Rollout for Flooring Superstores covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) Patrick Mahomes signs the richest deal in sports history, 2) Dallas FC pulls out of the MLS Is Back tournament, 3) NHL/NHLPA agree to Return To Play protocols and CBA extension, 4) What makes the NHL think they can pull this off when the MLS is struggling? (Perhaps it’s the Canadian Hub Cities, 5) Is Brent Sopel right? Is the NHL Return To Play “stupid”?, and 6) Manitoba’s Chief Public Health Official Dr. Brent Roussin welcomes the CFL to Winnipeg if it’s done safely.
  • The guys had a lengthy debate on all these topics and RP said, with the Mahomes deal, Kansas City is the NFL venue he’d like to visit the most. Dupes picked Seattle’s CenturyLink Field. Viewers were invited to chime in with their top destinations. They also discussed the CEBL’s decision to incorporate the Elam Ending to its championship tournament games later this month. RP said it’s confusing, but may make more sense once we see it in action.
  • Hour 1 aired across North America on Game+ TV and was highlighted by a visit with Philadelphia Flyers great Brian Propp. The Neuford, SK product serves as a team ambassador at Flyers homes games and detailed how the franchise got into position to be a Top 4 seed in the Eastern Conference. (He’s a big believer in goalie Carter Hart). Propp’s 94 goals with the Brandon Wheat Kings in 1978-79 are the 3rd most in single season WHL history, and he told many stories of his days with the Wheat Kings. He feels Wheat Kings defenceman Brad McCrimmon was a big reason for Sask players flocking to Brandon. “Propper” discussed the 1987 Stanley Cup Final with the Flyers/Oilers, and reminded us he was the SJHL MVP as a 15-year old in the 1970’s! Brian also promoted his website www.brianpropp.com, his new commercial real estate business, and line of Guffaw Cigars.
  • NHL great Sean Burke of the Montreal Canadiens front office joined the show from his off-season home in Northern Michigan. He previewed the Canadiens/Penguins Play-In Round series and the future of the Habs crease with Kayden Primeau. “The Original Burkie” also reflected on the time he and Rod sat together in the Coyotes suite at a Cardinals/Eagles NFL game in Glendale, AZ, and said the offer stands to do it again!
  • The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Which is Canada’s Game of the Week in Week 5 of the CFL SIM season – MTL at WPG, CGY at HAM, TOR at SASK or OTT at BC? The winner will be broadcast live on the RP Show Facebook Live channel. At press time, the Stamps/Ticats were leading.
  • Hour 2 was broadcast on Facebook Live only and the crew was joined by Paul Figler, the owner/operator of the website DUBNetwork.ca, from his home in Red Deer. “Figgy” discussed firing the website back up during the pandemic, covering the WHL in these uncertain times, and figures the Oil Kings may have a tough time playing if Rogers Place is used as an NHL Hub.
  • BC Lions great Angus Reid joined the show from his home in Vancouver and discussed his career where he won two Grey Cups as a member of his hometown Lions. Viewers were shocked by Reid’s weight loss. He explained that he played at 305 lbs, but now weighs in a 230 lbs. “Gus” fielded questions from Lions fans and said the franchise has its work cut out in a marketplace with several sporting and entertainment options. The longtime centre also talked about his new profession as a motivational speaker for teams, schools and corporations. He feels the life as a pro football player is ideally suited to overcoming obstacles and emerging victorious in life.
  • Roughriders LB Nakas Anyeka Tweeted during the show, “No need for government funding if players don’t agree to the horrid offer.” He’s referring to Justin Dunk’s report that the Federal Government will underwrite the cost of the CFL’s Return To Play and the only stumbling block is the players agreeing to it. RP surmised that all of the CFL faces an uncertain future and the timeline is tight to get back on the field. The host offered, “If you do the same things you’ve always done, you’ll get the same results you’ve always got.”
