TUESDAY SHOW RECAP: CFL UPDATES AND HOOPS TALK

GEROY05192020

We were back at it after the Victoria Day Long Weekend with Episode #236 of The Rod Pedersen Show! Here are the highlights:

  • Rod and Dupes got it going with The Rollout for Flooring Superstore covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) A weekend recap (a lot of golf), 2) Day 3 of the CFL Training Camp postponement but Day 68 of the pandemic, 3) NFL proposes a tweak to the Rooney Rule, 4) CFL players getting antsy, 5) The CHL applies for Federal aid, and 6) Which live sports are you watching? (NASCAR, golf, UFC, etc).
  • Regarding the postponement of CFL training camps, Rod said players and coaches best settle in for a lengthy wait. Rod mentioned he fielded a call from a long-time, Grey Cup-winning coach who had a proposal for getting back to play (a 10-game divisional schedule) but said the plan doesn’t account for any roadblocks (i.e. an outbreak of Coronavirus in a locker room mid-season). But all ideas are welcomed.
  • Regarding BC Lions owner David Braley’s weekend comments that the future of the CFL is in jeopardy if they don’t play in 2020 – and fans dismissing those comments – Rod feels too many people refuse to accept the truth about how grave this situation is.
  • TSN’s Farhan Lalji was the first guest, joining the crew by phone from Vancouver. He offered the latest in the CFL, saying the teams and players alike are “optimistic”. Rod asked over what exactly; playing or receiving government assistance? Farhan answered “both”. He thinks there could be Federal aid, but perhaps not as much as the CFL has requested. Farhan reiterated the Quarantine City concept the CFL has discussed, but thinks it’s a longshot. He’s also following the NFL and NCAA Football situations closely but admitted they’re “apples and oranges” to the CFL’s current problems. Farhan also addressed the issue of “insurance” and that players are concerned about the long-term effects of Coronavirus if they contract the virus.
  • CFL great Geroy Simon joined the show from Vancouver and said he’s in a holding pattern just like everyone else in the CFL. They’re all hoping for the best. Regarding the Rooney Rule proposal (the NFL requiring teams to interview a minimum of two minority candidates for head coaching positions), Geroy figures the NFL’s on the right track but not going about it properly. The GOAT said racism isn’t necessarily a problem in the NFL but positions of influence are generally held by white people who hire their buddies. That creates a problem for minorities who want to move up the ladder. It was an insightful visit. Geroy also talked about the NFL vs CFL debate in the Province of BC and said there’s nothing wrong with being a fan of both leagues.
  • Saskatchewan Rattlers guard Armoni Brooks joined the show from Texas to discuss his collegiate career at Houston, his time in the NBA G League and why he signed with the Rattlers. The Waco, TX product said he’s in close communication with the Rattlers and is optimistic about getting on the court in Saskatoon this summer.
  • Moose Jaw AAA Warriors head coach Trevor Weisgerber – a Vibank, SK product and long-time pro – joined the show to discuss his recovery from a kidney transplant and being named SMAAAHL Coach of the Year. Trevor encouraged viewers to fill out their organ donor cards and said he hopes to be an advocate for others suffering Kidney Disease.
  • The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Which of these leagues will get back to playing first? – NHL, MLB, CFL or NFL. At press time the leader was MLB.
  • You can vote now on our Twitter poll for the Rockstar of the Day for RoxDar Supply Chain Solutions. At press time, Trevor Weisgerber was leading the vote. Friday’s winner was Saskatchewan Rattlers President & COO Lee Genier.

Riddle me this Mr Joker (Randy Ambrosie). If the CFL is broke, asking for federal bailout money. Then why are the Saskatchewan Roughriders signing football players to contract?
