TUESDAY SHOW RECAP: FOOTBALL & HOCKEY CHAT!

It was all hands on deck for Episode #217 of The Rod Pedersen Show on Tuesday! Here are the highlights:

  • Rod and Dupes got things rolling with The Rollout for Flooring Superstore with these Quick Six show topics: 1) Brendan Shanahan’s “very optimistic” the NHL will conclude the 2019-20 season, 2) Max Pacioretty’s comment that this will be the hardest Stanley Cup to win, 3) Anthony Leblanc jumping ship from the Schooners to the Ottawa Senators, 4) The Gruelling Truth website’s list of the Top 10 Grey Cup games of all-time (1989 was #1), 5) Are you getting tired of lists?, and 6) Draft stories/talk.
  • Rod addressed the #1 topic in the CFL right now: Anthony Leblanc leaving the Schooners and if that spells the end of the expansion dream? Rod feels that Leblanc installed himself as the front-man of the effort and since the cornerstone of the drive is now gone, how couldn’t that be a major blow? He’s reluctant to believe that co-owner Gary Drummond is prepared to spearhead the effort now that Leblanc’s gone.
  • 2-time Grey Cup champion Shea Emry (Alouettes, Argos, Roughriders) joined the show from his home in Whistler, BC for an update. As the owner of an events company and various other businesses, Shea admitted that he’s shut right down at the moment however he’s enjoying the extra family time. He recalled being a first round pick in the 2008 CFL Draft by the Alouettes, and getting the call from GM Jim Popp. He took questions from viewers, and talked about the struggles the Lions face in Vancouver. “There’s a lot of things to do here,” Emry shrugged.
  • CFL great Nik Lewis was next up on the show, previewing the CFL and NFL Drafts. He feels there isn’t more buzz for the CFL derby because fans don’t know the players, and that Canada needs to do a better job of showcasing the amateur talent.  The Stampeders great discussed the plight of the CFL amid the pandemic and gave an update on his life post-CFL.
  • The focus shifted to hockey in Hour 2 and former NHL’er and WHL great Shawn Belle joined the show from his home in Edmonton. He talked about his brief time with the Pats in 2000, playing on Canada’s 2005 World Junior team (rated the best-ever with Sidney Crosby, Ryan Getzlaf, Dion Phaneuf, et al) and discussed some of the best and worst coaches from his career in the pro’s.
  • Philadelphia Flyers scout, NHL vet and Lethbridge Hurricanes great Mark Greig was next up, from his home in Lethbridge. He talked about the challenges facing NHL GMs and scouts as they prepare for the NHL Draft, and how they’re handcuffed by not being able to interview the prospects face-to-face. He discussed his son Ridley and the Brandon Wheat Kings, the cancellation of the WHL season, and the resurgence of the Hurricanes under GM Peter Anholt. As far as the NHL season goes, Mark said he’s optimistic too however he doesn’t have any inside info.
  • The guys discussed the popular ESPN/Netflix documentary The Last Dance which profiles the 1990’s Chicago Bulls. Rod felt it was a happier time in sports where you could just enjoy the games and not have to worry about wars on social media, and have to come off as an expert on every sport. The first two episodes dropped Monday night on Netflix and now fans have to wait until next week for more.
  • The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Who’s the greatest player in NBA history: Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, Michael Jordan or Other? At press time, M.J. had over 80% of the vote.
  • You can vote now on Twitter for the Rockstar of the Day for RoxDar Supply Chain Solutions. At press time, Nik Lewis was the runaway winner. CFL vet Mike Abou-Mechrek won Monday’s vote.
