TUESDAY SHOW RECAP: HOCKEY TALK WITH DREGER, SUTTER AND MORE!
We got deep into the hockey talk and dabbled in CFL news on Episode #275 of the RP Show! Here are the highlights:
- Rod and Dupes opened with The Rollout for Flooring Superstores covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) Rod feels the CFL must play in 2020 at all costs (his 1-hour appearance on Calgary’s Fan 960 on Tuesday proved there’s tons of interest in the CFL), 2) How will CFL teams add players into a bubble in the event of injuries to their active roster?, 3) Should Randy Ambrosie be addressing fans and media at this time?, 4) MLS Is Back is proving no lead is safe, 5) The Kings Park Speedway season opens this weekend and Rod, Dupes and Pat Fiacco will drop the green flag!, 6) TSN’s Darren Dreger reports this is a stressful time for the CFL.
- Rod went deep into the immediate and longterm future of the CFL discussion and said his appearance on Fan 960 drew interest from football types all across the continent. The panel agreed the CFL can’t afford to fall behind the pack as leagues Return To Play. This spawned into the concept of an NFL cash infusion, Federal government aid and more.
- Columbus Blue Jackets pro scout Rich Sutter joined the show from Lethbridge to discuss the Jackets’ training camp. We’re inundated with coverage of Canadian teams so Rich reported on the health of the Columbus team, who will start in goal, and what the expectations should be for junior players brought up by the big clubs for camp.
- The guys discussed the report of NBC bringing in American workers for NHL playoff telecasts and the Steve Simmons article that government officials “looked the other way” regarding border crossing. This set up Rod’s Rant for Bronco Plumbing & Heating where he said there’s different sets of rules for different people and if you don’t believe that, you’re naive. “This isn’t Grade 3 where everyone gets treated equally,” the host huffed. “This is life. This is reality.”
- Hour 2 was broadcast on Facebook Live only and TSN NHL Insider Darren Dreger joined the show to discuss his report that it’s a stressful time for the NHL. He explained it’s stressful for the teams to administer Coronavirus tests and there’s always the threat of an outbreak derailing the whole thing. RP asked if there’s a plan for a team dropping out like the MLS has experienced and Dregs said there is, but the NHL and NHLPA aren’t prepared to divulge it. The Langenburg, SK product said he’d like to report on actual hockey right now, but the pandemic still supersedes TSN’s coverage. He also reflected on taking a month off, but regrettably couldn’t make it back to his home province of Saskatchewan.
- New Moose Jaw Warriors assistant coach Gord Burnett joined the show to discuss taking the job, the Warriors rebuild, his longtime relationship with Warriors head coach Mark O’Leary, and what he learned from one season coaching the MJHL’s Winnipeg Blues.
- Near the end of the show the guys discussed the Twitter discussion between Tony Washington and Almondo Sewell about the CFL owners’ proposal and if the CFLPA doesn’t vote in favour of returning to play, the CFL is in big, big trouble. For instance, the Riders have said they’ll lose $10-million if there’s no 2020 season.
- The Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Which is Canada’s Game of the Week in Week 6 of the CFL SIM season (the actual CFL schedule)? At press time, BC at Winnipeg was leading. The winner of the vote will be broadcast live on the RP Show Facebook Live channel Friday at 7:00 pm MT.
