TUESDAY SHOW RECAP: NICHOLS OUT, CLARK GILLIES IN!

Tuesday’s Episode #165 of The Rod Pedersen Show covered the day’s sports news and a few trips down Memory Lane! Here are the highlights:

  • Rod, Dupes and the Silver Fox Kelly Remple opened with The Rollout for Flooring Superstores covering these topics: 1) Collaros re-signs with Winnipeg, 2) Rod being teased by Bomber fans, 3) Vernon Adams extends with Montreal, 4) CFL Combines in Japan but no CFL Week, 5) Battle of Alberta, 6) Super Bowl Party at Ballers contest and 7) Rod’s heading to Vegas to hang out with the Golden Knights next month.
  • News broke during the show that the Blue Bombers are releasing QB Matt Nichols following Monday’s signing of Zach Collaros. The panel broke down Nichols’ time with the Bombers and how agonizing this decision was for the Bombers braintrust. They discussed likely landing spots for Nichols.
  • The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre daily poll question was: Where will Matt Nichols sign: Ottawa, Toronto or other? The vast majority of respondents think he’ll sign with the Argos.
  • TSN Calgary’s Jermain Franklin joined the show via video chat from the Saddledome to preview Wednesday’s Flames/Oilers game in Edmonton, and the massive build-up. Frankie figures there will be nowhere near the fireworks which fans are expecting but wouldn’t be surprised if there was a tussle or two. He also reflected on the tragic passing of Kobe Bryant and said it hit him hard because he too is a father who puts on many miles taking his kids to their games.
  • The Leader Post’s Rob Vanstone joined the bunker in Hour 2 and talked about the CFL’s upcoming free agency period. R.V. figures the priority for the Riders will be retaining their free agents because they’re otherwise in tremendous shape coming off a 13-5 season.
  • Islanders/Pats royalty Clark Gillies – a Moose Jaw product – joined the show from his office on Long Island. He talked about the play of his Islanders, figures Jordan Eberle is having a fine season, and answered a ton of questions from viewers about his career.
  • Oilers/Winterhawks/Raiders alum Joaquin Gage joined the show from Edmonton and discussed his time in Prince Albert with Rod as Voice of the Raiders (1994-95). Gager said Edmonton hockey fans are bouncing off the walls in anticipation of Wednesday’s game but also predicts it will be a tame affair. He also talked about his podcast 2 Guys & A Goalie with TSN’s Dustin Nielson.

How about adding Odell Willis, another 35 year old, to play alongside Hughes (36), Henry (33) & Johnson, himself going on 32. Does that not worry anyone in Regina? Apparently not. And let’s not even go into the OL which, despite all the veterans present, was middle of the pack last year & had Cody running twice as far… Read more »
