TUESDAY SHOW RECAP: STU GRIMSON JOINS!

GRIMSON

Polarizing opinions and hockey stories were the order of the day on Tuesday’s Episode 199 of The Rod Pedersen Show! Here are the highlights:

  • Rod and Dupes opened with The Rollout for Flooring Superstore on Tuesday covering these Elite Eight show topics: 1) 2020 Tokyo Olympics being postponed for a year, 2) NHL owners/governors badly wanting to see the season be completed, 3) Could we go a full show without mentioning the Coronavirus?, 4) XFL QB P.J. Walker signs with the Carolina Panthers, 5) 3 Blue Jays are stranded at the team facility in Dunedin. Heaven or Hell?, 6) Will there be a CFL season? (Rod and Darren agree there will be), 7) NHL Draft & Lottery possibilities, and 8) The Memorial Cup’s cancelled for the first time in 102 years.
  • Famed sportscaster Mike Richards from Sauga 690 radio – formerly of Fan 960 Calgary and TSN 1050 Toronto – joined the crew via phone from Mississauga, ON to give his perspective on the latest in sports. “It’s embarrassing the NHL is still even meeting on this! The International Olympic Committee is the most arrogant organization in sports and even they’ve taken a knee,” Richards said. He also said thank God that liquor stores are still open in Ontario, and professed his love for the CFL and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. His dream going up in Southern Ontario was to be a kick returner for the Tabbies.
  • NHL great Stu Grimson joined the show from his home in Nashville, where he admitted to loving being housebound. The Grim Reaper said it’s his wife and dog who are getting tired of him being at home, but not him. The former Regina Pat told some tales of his days with the Regina Pats in the early 1980’s and how Jeff Crawford was the bodyguard for franchise leading scorer Dale Derkatch, not Grimson. Regarding the NHL season, Grimson said “It would be unfortunate to scratch the rest of the regular season. There’s still 1/8 of the way to go. I believe they will salvage some version of the season.”
  • The Silver Fox Kelly Remple joined the show from his living room where he discussed the devastation the pandemic has had on global economics. He then gave his thoughts on the junior hockey seasons being cancelled, and how much he and Rod were looking forward to the playoffs.
  • Former Regina Pats captain and Washington Capital Garrett Mitchell joined the show from his home in Hershey, PA amid the lockdown. “Mitchy” answered a ton of questions and told the story of his one and only NHL game. He was on a line with Alexander Ovechkin and Niklas Backstrom, and lined up against Jaromir Jagr.
  • In the final segment – Overtime – Rod said he’s going to switch the regular “Sports On Tap” feature to storytime where he’ll tell daily stories from his years in sports broadcasting. On this day, Rod told the story of the early 2000s where the Regina Pats were on a road trip to Vancouver and a threat from the Hells Angels towards Pats staff had been revealed. Rod detailed the circumstances around the threat, how he handled it as the team’s broadcaster at Pacific Coliseum, and finished the story by saying the whole threat turned out to be a hoax.
