WEDNESDAY COMMENTARY – BLACK TUESDAY

TUESDAY WAS NOT A RED LETTER DAY IN SPORTS.

IN CALGARY, THE CFL’S STAMPEDERS ANNOUNCED STAR QUARTERBACK BO LEVI MITCHELL HAS SUFFERED A BROKEN LEG AND IS GONE TO THE 6-GAME INJURED LIST.

WHILE THE CFL’S OTHER WEST DIVISION TEAMS AND THEIR FANS MAY BE REJOICING THE NEWS, IT’S NOT GREAT FOR THE CFL TO LOSE ONE OF ITS TOP PLAYERS FOR AN EXTENDED TIME.

GET WELL SOON BO.

AND THE SAME GOES FOR BLUE JAYS STAR SLUGGER AND OUTFIELDER GEORGE SPRINGER WHO’S GONE TO THE 10-GAME INJURED LIST WITH A KNEE SPRAIN.

THE JAYS ENTERED TUESDAY’S GAME AT WASHINGTON FOUR GAMES OUT OF A WILDCARD SPOT AND FOR WHATEVER REASON, THEIR FORTUNES ARE FADING FAST IN THE AMERICAN LEAGUE.

THEY WERE TROUNCED 12-6 BY THE NATIONALS – FORMERLY THE EXPOS – AND HAVE NOW LOST FOUR OF THEIR LAST FIVE.

THINGS HAPPEN FAST IN THE AMERICAN LEAGUE EAST. THE YANKEES SWEPT A DOUBLEHEADER WITH THE RED SOX AND LOOKED SHARP IN THE PROCESS. THEY OWN THE LAST WILDCARD SPOT.

I’M FAR FROM A BASEBALL EXPERT. I GREW UP PLAYING THE GAME ON SOUTHERN SASKATCHEWAN DIAMONDS AND CHEERING ON TORONTO JUST LIKE YOU. I FELL IN LOVE WITH THE JAYS WHILE OPERATING THEIR RADIO BROADCASTS ON CFSL WEYBURN.

THE PUNDITS DOWN EAST WHO KNOW MUCH MORE THAN ME HAVE WRITTEN THE TORONTO BLUE JAYS OFF IN THIS 2021 SEASON WITH A LITTLE OVER A MONTH TO GO.

I MAY NOT MAKE A LIVING ANALYZING THE BLUE JAYS BUT I KNOW IT’S A COMPLICATED GAME, BUT ALSO NOT THAT COMPLICATED. YOU NEED GOOD PITCHING AND TO BE STRONG AT THE PLATE TO BE A CONTENDER. THE BLUE JAYS HAVE THOSE THINGS, BUT NOT ALWAYS ON THE SAME DAY. CAN WE STILL BLAME THEIR LACK OF CONSISTENCY ON THEIR YOUTH? IF SO, FOR HOW LONG?

YOU MAY NOT NEED TO BE A BASEBALL EXPERT TO SEE THE JAYS ARE IN TROUBLE. MAYBE YOU JUST NEED TO BE GOOD AT MATH.

I WASN’T GOOD AT THAT EITHER, SO MAYBE THAT’S WHY I STILL BELIEVE TORONTO HAS A CHANCE.
