Wednesday Commentary: End Of An Era

It’s Random Thoughts Wednesday! Let’s have a look …
#1 – The big story in sports – in our world anyway – is the story of all-sports radio stations Sportsnet 960 in Calgary and Sportsnet 650 in Vancouver closing their doors for good on Tuesday. Without any warning.
Tragic? In some ways, definitely. But as Sports 1440 Edmonton owner/host Jason Gregor Tweeted, sports radio can survive and even thrive if it’s done right.
I’m proud to have spent many hours on Sportsnet 960 both as a guest, and as Voice of Canada’s World Junior team. In fact I was very close to have my own show there. Every minute on that station was magical, for me.
I feel like much more needs to be said about it. I’ll put it my weekend newsletter.
#2 – You’ll wanna hear our interview with famed NFL & CFL coach Marc Trestman from Tuesday. We got into ALL the ins and outs of his sure-to-be Hall of Fame career; including the 13th Man incident in the 2009 Grey Cup. We also promoted his new book “Teaching The Game”.

#3 – The CFL is front and centre for me now. The World Cup was fun, but I’m not following anymore with Canada and the US out.
One thing that pops out to me? 19,000-plus turned out for Touchdown Kelowna II on Saturday while 19,000-plus turned out for the Stampede Bowl two days before that in Calgary.
One crowd was celebrated while the other was scolded, yet the attendance number was the same. Am I the only one who finds that ironic?
And #4 – I can’t go any further without acknowledging our Moose Jaw Miller Express baseball club which swept a doubleheader against the league champion Regina Red Sox on Tuesday, to claim the TransCanada Cup season series.
Something special is brewing in the Band City. I’m so grateful to be a part of it!
