It’s Random Thoughts Wednesday. Let’s let ‘er rip …

#1 – Happy Opening Day, if you observe! That’s right. The 2026 MLB season opens Wednesday night with the New York Yankees visiting the San Francisco Giants on Netflix.

The Blue Jays get going Friday with the first of a weekend homeset against the Athletics. Isn’t it nice going into the year knowing the Jays have a chance?? On average, the pundits have Toronto listed 6th in the Power Rankings entering the season.

#2 – John Denver had it right. Some days are diamonds, some days are stones. But last night’s NHL game in Sunrise was a diamond for a lotta reasons. Paul Maurice was coaching in his 2,000th game and it was a wild one, as the Cats got out to a 4-1 lead, then saw Seattle roar back to tie it, only to have the Panthers win 5-4 in a shootout.

Oh the drama! Especially when my favorite player in the NHL – Jordan Eberle of the Kraken – faced my favorite goalie in the NHL – Sergei Bobrovsky of the Panthers – to clinch the shootout.

#3 – There are two things I miss the most about the Dub: The west coast trip, and the playoffs. And the puck drops in the WHL this weekend with eight series and for the very best preview of the postseason, check out Glen Erickson’s 10 WHL Things column at RodPedersen.com. Man, he does a great job.

#4 – And Tiger Woods returned to the game of golf Tuesday night to try and help his Team Jupiter comeback in The Golf League final against Team Los Angeles in that wild indoor golf league that’s all the rage. Alas, Tiger wasn’t enough for his team to win, but it sure got people talking.

And these days in sports, that’s the name of the game.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary.
