It’s Random Thoughts Wednesday. Let’s let ‘er rip!
#1 – At the conclusion of Tuesday night’s NHL games, all the Eastern Conference first round series were set. It’s gonna be Montreal vs Tampa, Buffalo against Boston, Carolina facing Ottawa and Pittsburgh up against Philadelphia.
We’ve got several days to preview them before the curtain rises on the Stanley Cup Playoffs on Saturday, but these are tremendous match-ups.
#2 – Let’s get it out now — the teams which missed the postseason – because after this week, we won’t talk about them for the a couple of months. It’s the first time EVER that the Rangers, Islanders and Devils all missed the playoffs in the same year. Not good.
Meanwhile after there were five Canadian teams in the playoffs last year, there are only three this season. Toronto and Winnipeg missing is a calamity in their own markets, but Canadians are gonna watch the hockey playoffs regardless.
All the new teams in the playoffs represent the second highest playoff year-over-year turnover ever. That’s great for the NHL.
#3 – Speaking of hockey, the Regina Pats made a coaching change on Wednesday. Brad Herauf is out after ten seasons on the bench, including the past three as head coach. That’s a helluva run! In fact I can’t think of too many who served longer. The greatest of ‘em all – Bob Turner – only served seven seasons on the Pats bench.
My guess is Herauf will be coaching somewhere next season if he wants to. Meanwhile this move will allow GM Dale Derkatch to higher his own guy.
Maybe it’ll be Jamie Heward? The Pats great is currently assistant coach with the AHL’s Henderson Silver Knights and was a guest on the RP Show just last week.
And #4 – Beyond that, tell me what you’re into right now if it’s not hockey? The NBA Playoffs are here, MLB is in full swing, golf too, plus UFL, soccer they tell me, and the NFL and CFL Drafts are right around the corner.
Ain’t sports grand?
