Just a whole lotta random thoughts today because my mind’s too scattered to focus on one thing for too long. Here we go:

#1 – Not sure about your Twitter timeline but mine’s been awash with commentary from fans and media alike about Tuesday’s retirement announcement of Patrice Bergeron, after 19 Hall of Fame seasons with the Boston Bruins.

The theme seems to be that it’s a hole the Bruins may not be able to overcome. But that’s not true. For sure he was a tremendous captain, Stanley Cup champ and 6-time Selke Award winner but no one’s irreplaceable.

Even the Edmonton Oilers won a Stanley Cup just two years after trading away Wayne Gretzky.

Methinks Boston will fill the void by committee because there will never be another Patrice Bergeron, but standing around talking about how bright the last light bulb was is going to always leave you in the dark.

#2 – Viewing the CFL from 30,000 feet, it seems all is not lost for the Saskatchewan Roughriders even if QB1 Trevor Harris is.

At 3-3, they’re in the race in the West after the opening third of the season which, frankly, is far better than I thought they’d be. But this is what the coaches get paid for.

Other teams are winning with back-up QBs so that’s what the Riders need to beginning Saturday against Toronto in Touchdown Atlantic.

It’s amazing that this could be the best Argos team ever considering most of us couldn’t name five of them, but it’s a great test for the Riders to prove themselves.

The season is not lost. Yet.

And #3 – The season probably is lost for the 0-7 Edmonton Elks but they made news on Tuesday announcing their upcoming game against BC will be broadcast in Punjabi, on 580 AM Edmonton radio. It’s believed to be the first pro football game ever broadcast in Punjabi, and Canada is home to 1-million of the Punjabi population. Alberta is the third-highest.

My first thought on this? That now people can listen to the Elks lose in two official languages! Seriously though, it’s a tremendous step in the right direction to grow the game to a new audience.

But sometimes the jokes just write themselves.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary

Great stuff, Some people can not be replaced – I have not listened to a Rider Broadcast and they’ve tried twice to replace the guy that was the best to ever do it. With regards to the Argos – As a CFL fan, the first Grey Cup I ever watched on TV and it was a big deal. The 1983 game where Toronto I guess ended their drought. After that it seemed automatic they were in or around Grey Cup games and win won every decade. The best Argos teams and I don’t know how to rank them. – 1991/Matt… Read more »
