WEDNESDAY RUNDOWN: BREAKING CFL NEWS AND NHL, NFL TALK

There was a lot of breaking news on Wednesday’s Episode #329 of The RP Show – Canada’s Daytime Sports Talk Show! Here’s the recap:

  • Rod and Dupes opened with The Warmup covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) The Jays face elimination Wednesday afternoon in Game 2 at Tampa (Did skipper Charlie Montoyo out-think himself in Game 1?), 2) Astros, White Sox and Yankees all won Game 1s, 3) Why are there so many Yankees fans in Canada?, 4) RP addresses criticism of the show becoming too political (he surmised that when government is dictating Return To Play, this is what happens), 5) Should the CFL 2.0 initiative be scrapped? (that was the daily poll question and over 70% of respondents said yes), and 6) NFL Week 4 Notes: Why are the Bears changing QBs when they’re undefeated?
  • The breaking news from Wednesday was that the Rangers officially announced they’re buying out the final year of goalie Henrik Lundqvist’s contract, and the Titans/Steelers Sunday game has been postponed due to a Covid outbreak with Tennessee. There was more breaking news to come!
  • RP Show NHL Insider Rich Sutter joined the show to discuss Lundqvist and figures he’s got plenty left in the tank and will sign with another team before long. Rich said that due to Covid complications, there’s going to be several earth-shattering moves in the NHL in the next few weeks due to salary structure and over-committed contracts. Sutter also talked about the Blue Jackets’ playoff win over Toronto and their Round 1 loss to Tampa, and the upcoming NHL Draft. He also gave a crop report saying harvest is almost completed in Southern Alberta but there’s still plenty of work left in Northern Alberta, where his family farms.
  • Hour 2 was broadcast on Facebook Live only and we were joined by CFL/NFL alum Stefan “Joystick” Logan. The 13-year vet announced his retirement from pro football live on the show! He said 2019 was going to be his last season anyway (with Ottawa) but kept those plans to himself, until today. After stops in BC, Montreal, Ottawa, Detroit, Pittsburgh and Miami, he’s accepted the running backs coach position at Lockhaven University in Pittsburgh. He’s also caring for his wife in Miami, who’s recovering from breast cancer. RP predicted that Logan will be inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame and Stefan said he’d go in as a BC Lion. He also talked about his stint with the Detroit Lions and although they made the playoffs while he was there, the franchise has a LOT of problems. Regarding his nickname “Joystick”, Logan said “one of the commentators came up with it” but he doesn’t remember who.
  • RP Show Director of Scouting Craig Smith joined the show to discuss Week 4 in the NFL and went around the league. He feels the Kansas City Chiefs are the NFL’s top team. “Let’s just stop the season right now and let Green Bay and Kansas City play for the Super Bowl!” Smith advised. He’s not a big believer in the Dallas Cowboys, said Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers are the early MVP favourites, and also said he’s still a fan of the CFL 2.0 experiment despite all the league’s current problems with remaining viable.
