WEDNESDAY RUNDOWN: CFL TALK & A WINNIPEG SPORTS DAY!
We tackled the hottest sports topics and dabbled in a lot of Winnipeg sports talk on Wednesday’s Episode #545 of The RP Show – Canada’s Daytime Sports Talkshow! Here’s the rundown;
- RP and Moose Dupont kicked it off with the Warmup for EECOL Electric covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) The Blue Jays split a doubleheader at Anaheim but Vlady goes 1/8 and Shohei goes 1/7, 2) Are the Stampeders for sale? Rod expanded on his scoop saying yes they are, and a buyer has been found, 3) Dak Prescott is back throwing at Dallas Cowboys camp and Aaron Rodgers will miss the Packers’ preseason, 4) The new season of HBO’s Hard Knocks debuted on Tuesday evening and Rod gave his thoughts on the coverage, 5) NHL Notes: Tony Esposito passes away at age 78, and 6) Wednesday morning the Winnipeg Jets signed D Neal Pionk to a 4-year deal with an AAV of $5.8M.
- Sportsnet Winnipeg’s Sean Reynolds joined the show to discuss the Pionk signing and said the trade to acquire Neal from the NY Rangers in June 2019 was another fleece job by Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff. Reynolds recalled a busy July for the Jets and said the team is set up long-term with a rash of flashy signings such as Nate Schmidt, Brenden Dillon, Paul Stastny and more. Reynolds also predicted how the Jets will cover the losses of F Mason Appleton and G Laurent Broissott.
- The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Which is Canada’s Game of the Week in Week 2 of the CFL season? BC at CGY, TOR at WPG, MTL at EDM or HAM at SK? At press time, Ticats/Riders was leading.
- In the Hour 2 Second Half Kickoff for Corr Grain we discussed the NFL’s crackdown on taunting for the 2021 season, discussed the play of Cody Fajardo, and had a debate on McPizza, McRib and McLobster!
- Next up was Winnipeg ICE forward Carson Lambos from Winnipeg, and Minnesota Wild first round pick. Carson reflected on his summer, being selected by Minnesota, playing – and getting injured – in the Regina Hub Centre bubble this spring, his family’s popular restaurant “Dairy Whip” in Winnipeg and much more!
- The final 20 minutes were devoted to Viewer Takeover and it had mostly to do with the Regina Pats raising their season ticket prices to watch Connor Bedard this year, and various CFL-related topics!

First: When I got the notification from the Regina Pats that after purchasing my 1/2 pack that I’d have to pay a difference – I HAPPILY paid! The fact Junior Hockey even survived is a miracle and this is a completely different scenario that previous regimes cash grab rake ins. There is no question the Regina Pats are in it to win it. This is an NHL caliber organization in the mold of the old Kamloops Blazers/Vancouver Giants or out east the London Knights and Quebec Remparts etc. It’s not a question of if, it’s a question of when we… Read more »
Who is Neil Pionk and how did he fleece the Winnipeg Jets, seriously, never heard of this Neil Pionk before this article.
He was only the Jets top defenceman last season
mister winnipeg,
top defenseman last season? then the winnipeg jets really got fleeced. that team really has a lot of work to do with their overall team.
The Jets took pionk in the trouba trade with NYR when trouba wanted out of Winnipeg. At the time everyone thought the Jets got hosed myself included, but no one thinks that anymore. Chevy worked some real magic on that deal.
Majic ???? How many years as the Jets gm and still haven’t come close to the final 4 NHL playoffs? nothing but a minor league gm! Majic? The Jets had majic with NHL defenseman, All World Allstar Dustin Byfugien, sadly chevy let him walk. As said, nothing but a minor league gm at best or worse. Nearing over 11 years and still a lot of work to the Jets roster to be accomplished. Sad people settle for mediocre in the professional ranks.
