WEDNESDAY RUNDOWN: GREMLIN TAKEOVER!

Wednesday’s Episode #348 of The RP Show – Canada’s Daytime Sports Talk Show – was a roller coaster ride from start to finish! Here’s the rundown:

  • Rod and Dupes kicked it off with The Warmup covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) The Dodgers win the World Series with a 3-1 victory in Game 6 over the Rays. Tampa skipper Kevin Cash won’t admit to a managerial gaffe in the 6th inning, 2) How much importance do analytics have in sports? (RP figures they shouldn’t dictate game decisions), 3) David Braley’s legacy, 4) The SJHL announces their 2020-21 schedule with a twist: they won’t play if capacity isn’t expanded from 150 spectators, 5) RP’s got a lot of reading to do this winter with books from James Duthie, Nick Kypreos, Ken Reid and Howard Stern, and 6) Week 8 NFL Notes.
  • A power outage in the bunker knocked the show off the air and the broadcast never did return on Game+ TV. Tech gremlins interrupted the interviews the rest of the way on Facebook Live and basically, all hell broke loose!
  • Saugo 960 AM radio’s Mike Richards joined the show from Mississauga and he scorched Kevin Cash and any other coach who uses stats to make coaching decisions. Richards morphed it over to the Toronto Maple Leafs and said GM Kyle Dubas is making a mistake by relying so heavily on analytics. A staunch CFL fan, Mike also reflected on the legacy of David Braley and said he’ll go down in history as the man who saved the CFL when the league needed it the most.
  • The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Are you on Team Analytics? Over 70% of respondents said no.
  • Hour 2 was broadcast on Facebook Live only and we re-upped on the Quick Six show topics and dropped the breaking news that the NLL is planning a return in the second week of April 2021. The guys then got into a deep discussion with viewers on David Braley’s legacy and the scorching comments from Sportsnet’s Stephen Brunt about the BC Lions owner. RP agreed that it’s true Braley saved the CFL but he also held the league back in many ways. He pointed to Braley’s outdated stance on blackouts as an example. “His ownership strategy would’ve fit better in 1955,” the host stated. Many viewers felt Brunt’s comments were ill-timed and unfair.
  • The Voice of the Toronto Argonauts Mike Hogan joined the show and had little to offer on Braley since the Argos had been sold to MLSE by the time Hogan got there. Hogie said, if anything, Braley should be remembered for his great contributions to the CFL. He also expressed how disappointed he is in the cancellation of the 2020 CFL season since the Argos were primed for a break-through with new coach Ryan Dinwiddie, new QB Matt Nichols and a host of locally-raised stars. He and Rod agreed that all nine CFL teams could make a legitimate case for why their franchise was hurt the most by the cancellation.
